There are a couple of snuff bottles coming up in a local auction in the UK this week.  I am quite interested in the turquoise and gold one - guide price £40-70 and the other, they refer to as amber style is guide price £25-40.

As a complete novice to collecting snuff bottles, I would appreciate any opinions.  Does anyone have any idea on dates etc...?

Thanks

Dear Julie,

I couldn't expand the photos, so was unable to examine them.
Best,

I agree with Richard Julie..

These are truly not worth the postage it would take for you to receive them...

Keep hunting !   Wink

Hi Julie,

I strongly recommend taking the advice given on your "Hello" thread. Browse as many books and old auction catalogues as you can before buying any bottles.

It requires patience and will-power, but will reward you many times over.

Yup. Listen to the sage advice here. I bought a couple of dogs before I finally learned my lesson.

Julie..

Do you have a favorite type of bottle medium ?  Glass, inside painted, porcelain, gemstone, etc ?

Yes thanks definitely appreciate the advice before I dip in and buy a few big mistakes!

In answer to your question George, not really yet.  I've seen so many beautiful snuff bottles on the Bonham's auction site.  I think I need to get out there and handle a few before I decide on a type to start collecting.  Although I am totally fascinated by the technique of inside painted!

"The Collectors Book of Chinese snuff Bottles" really is the very best first book for new collectors Julie.

Julie,  I agree with everyone here but George's advice seems heresy to me.
For me, the obligatory first book is the late Lilla Perry's Snuff Bottles.
The late Bob Stevens, who was a good friend of mine, wrote a great book,
and I think it should be the second book.
But Lilla Perry's must be first, because it sort of educates you to be a collector...
But I'm biased.... Roll Eyes

Lilla Perry's book is the 'Bible' for most collectors starting out. It was certainly mine.
Bob Stevens' book is the encyclopedia.
