Dear John,

The latest one is same dating as the one before it,
but I find it even more pleasing and appealing.
Best,
Joey

This next example [57mm] has a pomegranate, bat and peach motif on a bubble ground. From an internet auction in 2011.

Dear John,

My personal preference is for other colours,
but this is a well made 19th C. example.
Best,
Joey

This blue overlay [68mm] shows the boy/hero Nazha, perched on the head of the Dragon King of the Eastern Sea. One of my favorite motifs. From an auction in 2004.

Dear John, very nice bottles, all the last ones as the previous ones.
BTW it is Nezha, not Nazha, it must be a bad typing.
Kind regards
Giovanni

A really stunning blue overlay, John.
I would date it ca. 1800 - 1850.
Best,
Joey

Giovanni, my typing is bad. Joey, I agree with that dating. This probably later example [56mm] features the 8 Buddhist Symbols.

Good carving, but the colour looks odd to me, John.

This next Yangzhou example [55mm] I had to shoot on different color backgrounds to see the decoration. From the Collection of Albert and Eva Dunlap authors of "Behind the Bamboo Curtin".

Oh, John, the same provenance as my Chalcedony.
'Smuggled out' of Shanghai in 1941.
Interesting that you needed different coloured backgrounds
to properly show the carving.
Happy Patrick's Day [as my neighbours say in County Wexford]

Joey, Happy St. Patrick's Day to you also. This next bottle [55mm] I have seen several examples of. All are on the white glass body.

Dear John,

Is this appliqué glass with applied threading to form the
stems?
I've one like this I bought from Susan Page in 2018 or 2019.
Very nice. I'm assuming that they are ca. 1830 - 1890.
Best,
Joey

Joey, I do not believe this is applique glass. The overlay is too thin, the overlay is curved around the bottle and there is no trace of glue. This next example [52mm] has similar colors to my post #199. Both of the overlays are finely carved on an incised ground. From the first collection I purchased in 1997.

John,

If you know anything about 'Appliqué Glass', you know it is NOT
glued; the appliqués are formed separately, then applied
when both the appliqué and the bottle are hot enough
that the glass appliqué will adhere to the glass bottle.
They can be thin and they can be made to curve around the bottle.
And then a thin thread of glass can be applied if needed.
My bottle has flower head and leaf appliqués applied,
and then a thread of green glass to make the design look like a flower.
Best,
Joey

It is easy to distinguish between appliqué glass and carved overlay glass.
The contours of the appliqué glass are round toward the inside of the connection, forming a sharp connection; to be clear, if it is a leaf, the border looks going underneath the leaf. Carved glass is rounded toward the background glass. The pictures are too small for judging it clearly, but I agree with Joey, it looks applied glass especially looking at the pink leaves in the last picture.
Dear John, I like your last swimming dragons bottle, with dragons emerging from waves.
Kind regards
Giovanni

John,

The appliqué glass snuff bottle I bought from Susan Page in December 2019
was very expensive. They are relatively rare and highly valued.
Mine was previously published in Robert Hall's C.S.B.#1 in 1987, #46.
I will send you a private message as to price.
Best,
Joey

Dear John,

Thank you for posting it on my behalf.
Here is the info on it:
H- 57mm / 2.24 inches [w/o stopper]
Dated ca. 1780 - 1850
Provenance: ex.Bob Hall ltd, London;
Ex.private collection in Netherlands, bought from Bob in 1987;
ex. Susan Page ltd, London, bought by me on 11.December 2019
Illustrated in Chinese Snuff Bottles # 1, Robert Hall ltd., London, # 46.

Ranking [by Clare Chu] : 8***  [Ranking goes 1* - 10***]
As nice as these might be, Appliqué glass SBs don't get much higher
a ranking than 9*. Whereas a fine glass SB or overlay SB could be ranked 10***...
Best,
Joey
