Charll shared this beautiful Xianfeng (1851-1861) dated bottle depicting NeZha combating the Dragon King amongst a rolling sea of blue and eight mythical sea creatures.

All, this is a bottle I picked up at last year's ICSBS convention in San Francisco.  I tend to favor horse designs and this bottle always put a smile on my face when I look at the horses.

Glass Cameo Snuff Bottle:
Blown glass of flatten oval form with an overlay of white on a ruby red glass with splashes of brown frit to produce dappling on the horses’ coat and on the trees to simulated branch stobs and knots.  Carved as a continuous scene of four horses (two on each side) in a rocky landscape under two overhang pines where the tree trucks emerge from the bottle sides.  Finely finished raised oval foot rim.  Bottle base finished to taper in line with the bottle form.

Stopper is a pinkish-red half glass bead simulating coral set in a filigreed brass collar with a short brass spoon.  Height is 5.7 cm without stopper by 4.7 cm in width by 2.5 cm in depth.

Period: ca. 19th Century

Condition: Very fine with no chips, cracks, or repairs.

Provenance:  Powley Oriental Arts, who purchased the bottle from a local San Francisco antique dealer.

Charll, I really like the bottle but I hope you are going to replace the top. I found Mark Powley to be a nice guy and easy to deal with.

Dear Charll,

I'm not sure I met Mark Powley.
I was obviously not in a 'convention' frame of mind
after the Hamas Pogrom on 7.October.

The bottle is very sweet, and the horses are appealing.
Best,
Joey

John, yes I was eventually going to replace the stopper and provide a better spoon.  Still have to catch up on a number of bottles to catalog before I take the time to do stopper replacements. Likely during the mid winter rains when I stuck inside all day.

Dear Charll, nice bottle indeed. I am impressed by the lot of carving that went there, due to the unusually high thickness of the white layer.
Kind regards

Giovanni

I have a lot of overlay glass and have posted a decent amount on the ICSBS forum. This example [65mm] has a very unusual color combination with the blue over a bubble pink glass body. The side decoration is also different, carved with a bat holding a Bi disc. The line carving of the ground extending to the other side of the bottle.

Another unusual bottle [76mm] from the same collection. I do not normally see bats and koi on the same bottle. Wear to the high points of the carving.

Dear John,

     Yes, a rare combination.
And a beautifully carved example.
But I believe that the fish is a Dragon Carp, and mythological,
rather than Koi, which is natural [and Japanese!].
Best,
Joey

Another 3-color single overlay [63mm] from the same collection. Very fine detail to the carving. Interesting depiction of the bat, pomegranate and peach.

Dear John, nice bottle and very interesting. I have never seen them (bat, peach and pomegranate) joined together in a single assembly. Nice!

Giovanni, I agree it is an unusual way to carve that subject. I like the color combination on this bottle [70mm].

John,

Is it cinnabar red on opaque turquoise blue?
Or burgundy red?
Best,
Joey

Joey, I would say it is closer to cinnabar red.

The next bottle [72mm] has an interesting depiction of a coiled kui dragon in red overlay surrounding a pearl. The circular carving surrounding the dragon is very well carved and rounded.

John,

Ruby red on snowflake is of course very common.
But I don't believe I've ever seen the dragon & pearl design
done this way.
Best,
Joey

Joey, it is an unusual carving. This jarlet [60mm] is also unusual featuring 2 chi dragons. It has a nice rich sapphire blue color. From an auction in 2017.

This next bottle [55mm] is from the collection of my good friend Charles "Bud" Swain. The top I believe is original to the bottle.

John,

Both the Blue and the Green overlay examples are beauties,
though I prefer the Green one.
Best,
