could you please help me with the inscription on this Shandong school bottle?
Thank you very much!

Hi Mat

The inscription reads "imitating the style of Shi Tian".

Shi Tian is the art name of the famous Ming painter, Shen Zhou.

For your reference.

Richard,

I'm impressed that an artist took the effort to add an inscription,
and such a learned one, to what is basically a bottle made for the
tourist trade. Or am I missing something?
It is quite sweet, and reminds me of one of my first two bottles,
neither of which I still have.

The first one of the two I bought on 14.February. 1970 was
an enamel on copper, ca. 1820-1850, for CAD$35.
Three months later, the dealer had what looked like
an 18th C. Imperial Workshops enamel on copper,
with a Qianlong Nianzhi [Qianlong period made] mark
in blue enamel on the base.
I traded her mine for hers. Mine was a genuine, though not
Imperial, early 19th C. antique.
Hers was a ca. 1950s-1960s PRC copy of an Imperial bottle!
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

The second bottle, like the one posted in this thread, was a
Shandong School IPSB, with red overlay on the mouth, foot-rim,
and surrounding the paintings on the front and reverse panels.

About 2 months after I bought it, holding the copper bottle over my beautiful
old brocade covered 5 bottle box [Which I still do have!],
I accidentally dropped it onto the IPSB, cracking the modern glass face.
As it happens, I'd bought 4 more and received 9 other bottles as Bar Mitzva gifts,
so, while I was angry at myself for destroying a piece of Chinese art,
I still had 15 bottles to console myself with.

When asked what I wanted for my Bar Mitzva, which took place 2 weeks after
I bought my first snuff bottles, I replied, "snuff bottles".

My parents of blessed memory then said, "Joey, that's not fair. Bar Mitzva presents
[at the time, in 1970] tend to range between $18 and $75.
Snuff bottles range between $10 and thousands of dollars!
If you want to say 'snuff bottles', you must first go to the 3 dealers you know AND TRUST,
get their permission to select 10 or so bottles in a price range of $20 - $75, and hold those
bottles for a few weeks and let those who agree to buy you a snuff bottle have the names
and addresses of these dealers, so that they don't feel obligated to spend more than that.
If some will feel able and willing to [and 3 did! Joy..], they will be at the proper locations
to find snuff bottles."

I did so, and actually, 2 of the ladies who bought me snuff bottles as gifts, started collecting
themselves. But after a few years, got bored and stopped.
Best,
Joey

Hello all !
I’ am delighted by Mat’s post, indeed I showed a while ago a double inside painted snuff bottle with an inscription too badly painted to be read. Well , the inscription is almost the same as on Mat’s bottle .
I still don’t know its origins but i’m making progress 🤗
I recently bought a bottle with the same inscription….
The first one  ( double bottle ) would be by, or in the style of Yan Yutian according to Joey.
It seems to me quite old and finely painted. As for the second one , I don’t know what to think about it. Could it be a bottle for tourists ?
I wish you an excellent day.

Hi Bruno,
yourfirst bottle is very nice and yes, that is definitely the same inscription. As to age and origin of your bottles, I will better leave that to the experienced collectors.

It is better than a tourist grade bottle. The one and only small clue that I can see are the dots used for the leaves in the trees. This is a technique that was commonly used by middle period Shandong artists. My best guess is it was painted between 1920 and 1930.

Hi George, may I ask you for your opinion on my bottle, too? It is certainly not a masterpiece, but I wouldn't call it a tourist piece?
Thank you, Mat

Yes, not tourist grade. Indeed a legitimate middle period Shandong overlay bottle.

I want to guess it is a Le San painted bottle, 1890 to 1908
