Hi Charll & all

Interesting.

I actually have a group of contemporary stone bottles that I give a name to each.

I will post them in a separate thread.

Regards.

Charll, great bottle and a fitting name given to it by Tom. This next bottle has interesting markings and an unusual black matrix [64mm].

Tom, I like the random markings on the bottles. This one looks rather plain until you shine a light through it. Probably a true floater [47mm].

This next bottle [51mm] is extremely well hollowed and has an interesting provenance. In 2006 I bought a group of 10 bottles from Vickie Scribner, grand-daughter of Albert and Eva Dunlap authors of "Behind the Bamboo Curtin". The box of bottles was passed down through the family after being smuggled out of China in 1941.

The markings are stunning, and the provenance is
impressive.

Joey, I forgot to tell you that is the same provenance for the archaic jade bottle with the kui dragons you bought from Clare.

Dear John,

     Can you be more specific?
I'd like to add the information to my provenance for the bottle,
but I don't know when I bought it.
And I have 88 Jade bottles...
Though it is post 2006...
And Clare...
I will check, but what shape is it?
Best,
Joey

Thank you.

The next bottle I found in 2018 from a small auction [60mm]. Again a plain bottle until you shine a light through it. Possibly a true floater.

Joey, thanks for the reply. From a U.K. auction in 2016 this agate has a prominent white inclusion [67mm].

John,
You said the last bottle had a prominent white inclusion,
But didn’t feature it, except obliquely.
From the side it looks like the Hello Kitty “.

Joey, very funny! The next bottle also looks plain except for the exceptional hollowing [60mm]. Bought in 2021 at a small auction.

Another plain bottle [63mm] concave bottom and exceptionally hollowed. Purchased from a west coast auction in 2015.

John, the last bottle is another real beauty.
So simple and yet so sublime.
The late Patty Miller in Honolulu used to describe
bottles like this as having Shibui.
{It can be used to describe an object. Most of the time it has a positive slant, evoking unadorned, discreet beauty marked with a sense of moderation. An object or person described as shibui is elegant and seemingly simple, but reveals new facets as time passes.}.
I would refer to this material as Chalcedony.
Best,
Joey

Another bottle with Shibui. Unusual shape, the hollowing all the way into the flat shoulders [59mm]. A lucky find at a small auction in 2016.

Dear John,

You are right. It definitely is/has Shibui.
I'm not always sure how to use the word.
The bottle confused me at first; I thought it was cylindrical.
Then when I saw the base, I realised it was oval.

I wanted to ask you about the previous one, the Chalcedony.
Is the foot an oval inset foot-rim?
I have been trying to figure it out.
Best,
Joey

Joey, the bottle does have an oval inset foot-rim. The next bottle [56mm] is very well hollowed and came with the cover around the foot-rim. I realized after I received the bottle, that it is a bottle holder from a custom made wood box. I have kept them together.
