All,

We've discussed this 'pillowing cloud' (Botryoidal) effect before which occurs in the formation of a number of minerals, ex., malachite, smithsonite, hematite, chalcedony. etc.

Botryoidal minerals form when many nearby nuclei, specks of sand, dust, or other particles, are present. Acicular or fibrous crystals grow radially around the nuclei at the same rate, appearing as spheres. Eventually, these spheres abut or overlap with those that are nearby.

Charll, you of course are correct. The next bottle [58mm] has the typical cloud "Botryoidal" pattern. The interior is well hollowed, nice foot and handles. From an internet auction in 2010.

Dear Charll,

You are of course correct, but 'cloudy' is easier to write than "Botryoidal" ... Roll Eyes Shocked Grin

The next bottle [53mm] has banding and dark inclusions. It is very well hollowed and has nice handles. From Bonham's S.F. in 2009.

Jo, thanks for the reply. This next bottle [53mm] is another of moonflask shape. Typical cloud pattern and very well hollowed. This shape feels very good in the hand. From an auction in 2016.

John,

Both of your last two posted bottles are beauties,
but I prefer the second one.

Hello,
I bought this bottle few months ago at a French auctions, in agate, not large, nice shape and very pleasant to hold. It seems well hollowed. I would like to be sure of its age. Can we consider that it is old? Yes or not and,

Last one looks like similar.
Thanks

Thomas

Thomas, I have been trying to find a picture of a bottle I bought a couple of years ago. I think it is similar to yours. This is modern but very good work....John

Hi Thomas,

From the photographs I would say your bottle is from the 1800s - probably somewhere between 1800 and 1880.
Is it well hollowed and smooth inside?

Hello John, Hello Tom (sorry Google translate fault)
Thans for your answer.
John, thanks for shared yours.

Tom, yes "well hollowed" I think (you can see it in exterior photo) and smooth inside.

Dear all,
I am finding the decoration of this bottle very strange.
There is the three-legged toad, but then what about the figure? In theory he should be Liu Hai; but with that face, looking so modern in style?

Thomas,

The stone bottle you pick up from a French auction looks exceptional to me.  Age I'll defer to Tom's estimate as stated above.  What's exceptional is the stone carver created the design as a subtle indentation cameo cut into the bottle.  The design is well balanced, centered, and elegant.  I would have assisted this bottle to be 19th century as based off the photo's and hollowing.

Next thing to assess is the hollowing itself.  Is the interior:

1) Uniformly hollowed, smooth, and polished, or

2) Uniformly hollowed, smoothed, but left unpolished, or

3) Well hollowed with good uniformity, but as has visible drill marks and/or grinding striations.

Dear Thomas,
you and Tom and Charll are right. After posting my post above, I have found a bottle in the book of the collection of the V&A Museum carved with a figure with the same style of face.
Congratulations.

This next example [60mm] is very well hollowed, has nice handles and a small raised carved footrim. From an auction in 2018.
