Hello everyone,

A repousse and chased gilt copper snuff bottle decorated in high relief with nine of the Eighteen Lohans amidst clouds on one side, and with the same composition repeated on the reverse. The original stopper features a dragon encircling the knobbed finial. The footed base is concave. Height : 6.6 cm (7.7 cm with stopper). Weight: 43.6 gms. I bought it in 1985. It was published in the Winter 1987 Journal of the ICSBS but I have not had any comments and opinions from Society members. I would like to know the approximate age of this bottle; any other comments are most welcome and much appreciated.

Thanks and best wishes to all,

Mr. Koh,

I'm ashamed to admit that I did not look carefully at the bottles illustrating "A Note From Singapore", pp.24 & 25, in the ICSBS Journal, Winter 1987 [Vol. XIX, #4].
My own exhibition in the Israel Museum had me quite busy, [documented in the same Journal, p.23].
And Bob Hall's humorous entry [enameled glass snuff bottle of collapsed form {!}], was always a distraction, whenever I opened the copy.

I've now looked carefully at your gilt bronze bottle, and think it is ca. 1820-1890, but I tend more to the period 1850-1890.
Best Wishes,
Joey Silver

Thanks for sharing this bottle.  I can not add much for metal snuff bottles are not one of my strong areas of interest.  However, I did go back and read your ICSBS correspondence in the Winter 1987 Journal.   As mention by you, I too would expect this design to be replicated as a molded porcelain, in ivory, possibly bone, horn, or amber, cinnabar, and wood (pear wood as an example).  The question would be as other examples are found is which came first?

On dating, at present I would respect Joey's estimate and go with it.

Sorry I can not be of more help, Charll
