Good morning everyone,

Thank you George for welcoming me to the forum .

My name is Julie and I am based in the UK.  I am interested in starting a collection of Chinese snuff bottles.  I have recently seen a few coming up in auction.  I am looking forward to learning and gaining some knowledge from more experienced collectors.

Dear Julie,

Welcome and wowed, you are definitely doing something that most of us did not. Learning before buying!!

This is a great place to read up on snuff bottles and all of us will be there to share our experience before you commit to buying.

Since you are based in UK, V&A has one of the best Snuff Bottle collection in the world. Do take some time to see for yourselves.
Both Bonhams offices in London are another good place when they have snuff bottle auction around. There, you can fondle with the bottles and get a feel of what you really like.

Happy collecting,
YT

Hi Julie,

Welcome to the forum - you have definitely come to the right place. I'm also from the UK in London and agree with YT that the V&A has a great collection. Sometimes, not all of them are on view in the museum's main area on the ground floor, but you can take a lift when inside up to the study rooms and see many more.

Best,
Luke

Welcome from another newcomer to this site. You've found the right place to find the answers to your questions. Buy as many books and auction catalogs as you can find and wear them out. I found that invaluable when starting out. Happy collecting!  Bob

Dear Julie,

A warm welcome from me as well.
I live in Jerusalem Israel, and studied before I started as well.
But that was because my parents insisted [I was under thirteen at the time].
Best,
Joey

Julie, welcome from a collector in Northern California.

Bob is right with the statement above.  I spent a many a nights over the years pouring through such books and action catalogs as my night time reading in bed before going to sleep.

Looking forward to your participation in the sharing of this hobby.

Dear Julie,

Also check out the BM. They've got great holdings of snuff bottles, as well.
And contact Susan Page:

susan@snuffbottlepages.com

+44 (0)7721 747153

+44 (0)203 036 0044

Green Park House, 15 Stratton Street, London, W1J 8LQ (by appointment only)

Susan's a good friend for over 30 years.
2 Things:
1. Feel free to tell her I suggested you contact her.
2. DON'T feel obligated to buy anything, even after spending hours looking at her bottles, most of which are wonderful.
It's her job to show possible customers her sales stock. And she loves snuff bottles as well as sells them.
If you were in the Palm Springs CA/LAX area, I'd recommend Clare Chu, who's been a close friend even longer - almost 40 years.
Both got their start working for Bob Hall Ltd., while Bob got his start working for Hugh Moss Ltd.
Best,
Joey

Speaking of Clare.. I just got a book of hers called, Chinese Snuff Bottles, from Southern California Collectors. An exhibition catalogue in conjunction with the 48th annual ICSBS convention, October 29, 2016.

A very nice book with some especially unusual and unique bottles Smiley

Dear Julie,
a warm welcome from Italy. I am joining to those who gave you wise advices. It is good that you have not bought those low grade bottles.
Wish you a good stay here!
Kind regards
Giovanni

Dear George,

Every attendee to the 2016 LAX Convention received a copy.
Yes, some VERY FINE bottles indeed are illustrated in that catalogue.
The exhibition was at LACMA [LA County Museum of Art], when Steven Little was curator.
Best,
Joey
