Hi All

This is a summary of the presentation during our last virtual meeting.

There are currently 5 inside painting schools in China today. (yes, 5 instead of 4)

They are as follows:

Jing(京) School in Beijing
Ji(冀) School in Hebei
Lu(鲁)School in Shandong
Yue (粤) School in Shantou
Qin (秦)School in Xian

The name of the school is associated with its location.

Jing is short for Beijing or the capital.
Ji was the ancient name of Ji Zhou, the state of Ji which is the present day Hebei.
Lu was the ancient state name where Shandong is.
Yue is the name for southern China.
Qin is located at Xian which is where the capital of Qin dynasty was founded and located. (Emperor Qin Shihuang who conquered the warring states and united the empire).

The Jing School, the earliest inside painting school in China.
Current grand master: Liu Shouben.
By the way, master Wang Xisan also came from this school.

The Ji School was founded by Wang Xisan when he returned to his hometown in Hebei.
It is currently the largest school for inside painting.
Current grand master: Wang Xisan.

The Lu School was also an early school with a history of some great artists.
Current grand masters: Li Kechang and Zhang Guangqing.

The Yue School was the smallest among them all but uses unique bottles and tools for the craft.
Grand masters: Wu Songling and Lai Yining.

The Qin School is the latest addition to the scene. It was founded by Zhang Tieshan, a student of Wang Xisan in 2002.
Grand master: Zhang Tieshan.

The Qin School was excluded from my earlier presentation as I did not have any example from this school.

I attached a photo of Master Zhang's bottle for your viewing pleasure (not from my collection).

Enjoy!

Richard

Richard- Much Thanks for your research and posting this information.

It should be helpful to all of us who love these tiny works of art that bring us much joy.  I admire the example of Master Zhangs bottle you attached from the Qin School.

Hi Richard,

So am I correct in thinking that Wang Xisan's earlier works fall into the Jing School?

Hi Tom

Yes, you are right. Both Wang Xisan and Liu Shouben were students of the Ye family.

Regards.

Tom

Wang Xisan earlier works of the "Early Modern Period" were via the Ji school in Fucheng, Hebei province, 1967.

Tom, I have one last extra copy of Peter's, "Contemporary Schools of Inside Painting, an introduction to the history of very modern inside painted snuff bottles". If you do not already have a copy, I am happy to send you this last one.

Hi George,

Thanks very much for the offer, but apart from a handful of them, I don't collect IP bottles - modern or otherwise.
Please keep Peter's 'opus magnum' for someone who will genuinely appreciate it, and put it to good use.

If you can send me this great summary chart in a downloadable format, I'd love a copy of it. Was it compiled by Peter?

Actually, Richard, the earliest inside painting inside bottles was done in Guangdong province, by Gan Xuanwen,  Chen Quan and a third artist whose name I forget [see below about him].

The earliest inside painted snuff bottle known to me was in the late Y.F. Yang's collection, and was dated 1798, 2nd or 3rd year [I don't remember] of the Jiaqing Emperor.
The technique was probably developed from European reverse painting on glass, produced from the mid-18th C. in Guangzhou [Canton] by Chinese artisans for export to the European market. This according to Y.F. Yang z"l.
A northern Chinese or possibly Manchu artist copied the technique and brought it to Beijing.
He's presently being touted by an English dealer/collector/ 'scholar'/etc. as the inventor of inside painting.
Best,
Joey

Hi Joey

Thanks for your comment.

We are discussing about Modern Inside Painting School in this thread, not the history!  Grin Grin

Dear Richard,

In your first post in this thread: "... The Jing School, the earliest inside painting school in China...."
I was simply correcting that error.
Best,

Hi Joey

Thanks for the clarification.

I do agreed that the earliest record of inside painted artist is probably Gan Xuanwen. However, I don't think he started any school!

Regards.
