Dear all, At the very end of this video there is an interesting, very short video, made in Mongolia in 1920.
You can skip all the main part of the video and jump at a few seconds before 24:00 where the one of our interest starts.

Kind regards
Giovanni
Edit: I have removed the original link and provided a new one to the only part of our interest

Dear Giovanni,
That was so interesting. Thank you for sharing. And thanks too for suggesting we jump to minute 24:00 - I had no interest in any of the first 24 minutes, but that final minute was priceless!

From the 1920s Mongolian film (no video back then) I noticed several interesting things:
1. exchanging snuff bottles was a greeting formality, starting with the elders present
2. both men and women took part in the ritual
3. they swapped bottles in one fast and smooth motion while appearing to shake hands
4. this means that most of the people inside the tent were already holding a bottle - only a few were empty handed
5. each 'ritual' involved two exchanges - after which each person got their own bottle back
6. I knew the custom of loosening the stopper to sniff and appreciate the aroma of the snuff in the bottle you have just been given, before giving it back. But the move was so fast the bottle didn't always get as far as the nose, so it really was meant as only a symbolic gesture

Regards,
Tom

Dear Tom,
yes, I too noted that, it was a symbolic gesture.
That is normal I think; normal, everyday gestures of this type become formal in time.
Kind regards
Giovanni
And yes, of course, the original was a film movie.

I am not expert on that, but it would be nice to download that video and cut out only that final part to keep it.

Dear Giovanni,
I would like a copy of it too, but have no idea how to save only this part.
Maybe one of our Forum IT-savvy members can help....?

Tom

Dear Giovanni,
You did it! Thank you for this.
Now if you can add some soundtrack, that will be perfect....!   Grin

Thank you for sharing. That was very interesting. The choregraphy of movement almost reminded me of an old time country line dance.
