Dear all,
some of you know that I am fond of fish bottles, conjoined or single.
The last one I bought from Laurence Souksi is a porcelain bottle with blue
enamels under cover, moulded in the shape of two fish side by side forming a small vase with handles. The base is not enameled.
According to the vendor it is 19th century.
On the internet, I found several similar objects (with slightly different shapes of the waves between the two fishes) that were labeled "medicine bottle". Is this the case for our? Where can I get more information?
Thanks for any hint!
Georges
PS: I know Joey wrote once: every snuff bottle is a medicine bottle, but not every medicine bottle is a snuff bottle, but...

Love the bottle !  Nice find Smiley  Could be much earlier than a 19th..

Likely would have originally been created for use as a medicine and then a snuff bottle later..

Have a look at Offspring to the Snuff bottle

Interesting bottle!  Going to now read the article George mentioned.  Great find.  Did you post earlier the bottle you bought from Laurence?  If so direct me to the post.  I would love to see it.  She tends to have some interesting bottles and several have gone home with me!

Thanks George for your appreciation. I remember now having read your interesting notice about the link between medecine and snuff bottles some years ago.
Hello Joearp. The picture of the twin fish bottle is included in my post. It was on Laurence's website until very recently.

Georges,

Snuff bottle or converted medicine bottle?  Boy, this is a tough call for me as well.  Given the presence of the open rings, it appears to have been made to be hung with cords for wearing around the neck, looped over or through a sash/belt, or have a wrist cord.

Regardless, if it is now fitted with a typical snuff spoon it is presently a snuff bottle with the intent to be used as such.  That is the best help that I can provide.

Here are a couple of similar examples from an auction in 2013.  Your bottle appears be much older in my opinion than the bottle shown on the link.

I agree your bottle does appear older than these examples Charll referenced.  I suppose you asked Laurence if she had any information on the Provenance.  If not I am sure she would be happy to provide and this could be helpful in dating this beauty.  Best of luck!  Jo

I did, Jo, and he just said it was from an old Belgian collection...
