Dear all,

This year’s Sotheby’s HK Spring Sale has been postponed to July due to COVID-19. As it coincides with my summer study break, I had the opportunity to visit its preview today. No snuff bottles this time, nonetheless I’d like to share with you a few items that fascinate me.

Enjoy.

Best to all and stay safe,
Samson

You’re welcome guys!

Somehow, as significant as they are, these superbly made pieces don’t appeal to me as much as snuff bottles do, although they nevertheless serve as a vehicle for the history they each represent. Also, works on snuff bottles require high level of precision and exquisite craftsmanship, that really amazes me...

Best,
Samson

Thanks for sharing Samson.

The thing about snuff bottles that appeals to me most is that they can fit comfortably in one's pocket!

I received Sotheby's invitation to the Hong Kong "Spring" Sales 2020. It didn't say anything specific about Chinese ceramics.

The front features a picture of two items only:
A 4.49 carat fancy vivid pink internally flawless diamond ring, estimate HK$58-68 Million, and a 5.04 carat fancy cut vivid blue diamond ring, estimate HK$60-75 Million.
My wife had a hard time deciding which of the two she preferred, so we're going for both....    Grin  Grin  Grin

All best,
Tom

Good luck getting those two diamond rings Tom!  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Grin

I‘ve chosen to conceal from my wife the fact the the sale features fine diamond jewelries... Grin Roll Eyes

Anyway, my invitation card features a contemporary Chinese painting... I had a look with the paintings and calligraphy works too. Some of Emperor Qianlong’s calligraphy works were exhibited. Also works of Rembrandt... Always an exciting experience to visit the preview of such major auctions! Treasures everywhere...

Best,
Samson

I saw a vase that appears to be an inexpensive reproduction of the top vase already. Were there always reproductions of it floating around or were they made since the catalogue came out? If they are new, that was awfully fast work for such a complicated design.

If it's still warm the chances are that it's new...!  Cool

I should have asked to handle it so that I could tell if
it’s warm... Grin but I couldn’t afford to take the chance of it slipping off my hands.... Wink  Roll Eyes

Dear Samson,
I understand what you mean. It is the reason why I do like Chinese ceramics before and until Yongzheng; Qianlong ceramics does not appeal to me, I find them “cold”, too much perfect, liveless.
But of course if I find a vase like that one at a flea market I will do an exception😊😊
Kind regards
Giovanni

Dear Joey,
it's a way to classifying fakes.
If one say: "it is still warm from the kiln", it means that it is quite recent.
While if one says: "it is still HOT from the kiln", then it means that it is a brand new fake Grin
Kind regards
Giovanni

Then let’s drop it like those who fancy freshly baked sweet potatoes but have their hands scalded when they can’t help but grab one as soon as they came out from the stove...
