Beautiful things deserve appreciation

Dear all,

It’s the beginning of a new year, the beginning of a new decade...

I reckon it’s a good idea to start everything with a fine bottle. May I present this  “Children at Play” bottle, painted by Ye Zhongsan for Mr. Yougeng (幼耕).

Some of you may find this bottle familiar... Wink

Best to all,
Samson

Lol …  Smiley It really is an extra nice one Samson.. Congrats, and Happy New Year, and decade !

Maybe other members can weigh in on your thoughts for using the painted for Mr. Yougeng as a provenance ?

Nice one Samson!  That name sounds familiar, but I can't remember from where.

Happy New Year Cheers,

Yes George, that would be great!

Incidentally, I found a very similar one in the following link, currently at the Wuhan Museum in Hubei, China. Painted in 1930 for a different person.

That museum bottle is an amazing find Samson .. Curious, what is the name of this second person that he painted this one for ?  Actually can you tell us what the entire script reads?

For the bottles being three years apart, the similarities, and the fact they were both "painted for" is an uncanny coincidence..

Is it not unusual to see a YZS bottle "painted for" an individual ?  It is not like I am expert about YZS, but yours and this museum bottle are the first I have seen.

Dear George,

Most inside painted bottles were inscribed with personal dedications.
Almost all of the Ma Shaoxuan portraits were.
They were given as birthday gifts, wedding gifts, emoluments ('bribes'!), etc.

Samson,

That's a great bottle and so interesting that it has as "cousin" out there so similar.

Thanks Brian!

Yes George, it’s written in the museum bottle that it was painted for 裕豐 (Yu Feng) 姻弟 (Yin Di). Yu Feng is probably just the name of the person for whom the bottle was painted. Upon a little search, it seems like Yin Di is a courteous way of addressing a peer connected to the addressor by a matrimonial relationship. So the person was probably some kind of brother-in-law for Ye...

Just my two cents...

Best,
Samson

I just noticed two other characters that could be a name - 潤之 (Run Zhi). I wonder if that could denote a person commissioning Ye the bottle as a gift for his brother-in-law... I’m not absolutely sure as I can’t fully comprehend the wordings... but somehow sounds likely...

Best,
Samson
