This was in a recent auction which included a lot of snuff bottles. Normally I don't get side-tracked from focusing on the snuff bottle lots, even if other items are appealing. But when I saw this lot I was instantly drawn to it, and could not resist bidding. Luckily there was not much interest in it, so I managed to win it within the low estimate.

Description:
A soapstone scholar’s desk object, carved in the form of a small boulder, resting on a flat foot, the stone of a lustrous amber tone; one side finely carved with a group of bearded sages gazing at a scroll, beneath a gnarled pine tree and rockwork, a pavilion in the distance; the reverse with an inscription in semi-cursive raised script, reading '北山白雲裡,隱者自怡悅,石卿作', which may be translated as:
‘Northern mountains amidst white clouds,
the hermit alone is joyous. By Shiqing’.

Height: 10.0 cm
Signed Shiqing (1924-2013)

Provenance: Bonham’s Bond St., London, 7 November 2019

Tom,

A really lovely item! I imagine it fits in very well with your bottles being quite small in size… Congratulations!

Best,
Luke

Dear Tom,

      It's gorgeous! I'm envious.
Is it already in Bangkok? If not, and it is still in London, I'm happy to pick it up, and bring it in Jan.
Best,
Joey

I am not really interested in soapstone carvings, they have never caught my attention, but it sure looks great between several bottles of tobacco.
Thanks for share it!
