Dear George,

The late Russell Mullin was a great snuff bottle collector of the 1940s-1970s. His son Terry and wife, have continued haphazardly, but he has published his late father's journals about collecting and collectors, which  Russell had called "Snuff Bottle Monkey Business', partially because he saw all the activity we collectors get up to amusing, and partially because he'd just bought a Suzhou Jade monkey bottle!
He did NOT mean by the term 'shady' business.

Stuart Sargent was paid 'big bucks'(Not sure how much, really) by the Mullins to 'edit' (read 'ghost-write'!) the book and  to give the lecture. And we paid him too, for the lecture, but just an honorarium. And he and his wife were invited to all the meals as our guests -  the High Tea on Tues. aft.; Lawry's The Prime Rib on Wed. for dinner.; at the Shen Collection museum on Thurs., and the Final Banquet on Fri.  (The reason I've gained a couple of kgs during the convention!  Cry   Roll Eyes besides my inability to say no to delicious food!).
Best,
Joey

I also thought it was interesting that he gave a map that showed the Beverly Wilshire and the proximity of the  early collectors as well as some of the shops they frequented. At that time many great collectors like Bob Stevens and Lila Perry were within a small distance of the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. Also what was interesting is that the book contains notes regarding the banter back and forth between collectors. Wink  It seemed there was a lot of buying and selling between collectors.  I ordered a copy and look forward to reading it when it arrives. I enjoyed the lecture very much.

My pleasure, George.

In 2003, at the previous LA convention of the ICSBS, we visited Terry Mullin's palatial home overlooking LA. It has featured in many movies as a backdrop, with someone lounging at the infinity swimming pool with the superb views of LA below, or swimming, or lying face-down in the pool (in episodes of at least 3 detective series I've seen - one in The Closer, one in Monk, and I think the earliest one was in Columbo; as well as a number of LA-set murder mystery movies. Oh, and thinking back, there is one in an episode of Murder She Wrote, when Jessica Fletcher is visiting a nasty TV or movie producer, and the no-goodnik ends up face-down in the pool.

They were very hospitable to our group and laid on a fine spread. And were very considerate to keep the 'kosher' lox and sushi far away from the prawns and oysters, etc.!  Cheesy
     Best,
Joey

Dear Joey,

I recall reading somewhere that the house once belonged to Alfred Hitchcock. Do you know if that is correct?

Dear Tom,

I don't remember, quite frankly. And considering how the Mullins are into the 'scene' in TV- and Movie- Land, they would have said so. I will ask and 'revert' to you (as Irish solicitors are wont to say!)   Roll Eyes
