Although I am not entirely prepared (my lovely child cannot seem to find time to help her mama) I am posting nevertheless.  I have not entered the descriptions and titles to the photos...I would prefer to be accurate so I am waiting for your comments.  I have organized them into sets if you prefer to view them on the Flickr page that way.

Unfortunately for me a few have slight imperfections...the enamel over copper pair suffered a mutual accident..the good news is that the damages were on the lateral edges and not the pretty artwork.  The other with issues is the green glass bottle.  It looks much worse in the photo than it actually is...the glass on the neck has an interior crack (you cannot feel the crack..its inside the glass).

I would like to know the as much as you can tell me.  The dating and materials if not obvious and possibly the artists - I realize that is a stretch.  The writing on the inside painted bottles is not as visible in the photos as I would like, but I am working on this.  I know two of them appear to be by the same artist.  The majority of bottles have been used (the have residue).  Here is a question...I understand that snuff was ground tobacco which I would expect to be brownish in color however many of my bottles have white powdery residue...is this not snuff?Huh

Soooooo here is the link:  [http://www.flickr.com/photos/frescasnuffs]

Hoping you can access it...you may have to copy and paste it to your browser-its not looking like a link to me (maybe someone can help me fix it).

Here is the link so that members do not have to copy and paste

You may have better luck posting each bottle within the correct boards in the forum..  We have specific areas to post glass, rock/gem, Modern inside painted glass, and the porcelain boards look like they would cover what you have there..

Hi George...l have been trying to post photos per your tutorial...I must be doing something incorrectly.  When I preview the posts my photos are red x's.  I am too tired at the moment to continue trying...still have one more day left to the work week... so I will try again tomorrow evening or saturday.

Thanks

Gina,

I went through the same frustrating ordeal last November when I was learning to use ‘photobucket’.   Hang in there you’ll get it figured out.  Once I did it a few times it became easy, but as you indicate it is a 'hair puller' the first time.

It's no problem and happy to help ya out..

Lets see..

First, simply click on the image you want .. I am using this one as an example..

Once you click on it, select what ever size you would like.. The "medium 500" seem to be good for me..

Now a new page will open with the new image size.

With your mouse.. Do a "right click" on the image and then from that pop up window, select "properties"

Then another window will pop up looking like this..

Run your mouse over the image url until it is completely in blue.. Then place your curser over that highlighted blue and "right click" with your mouse... Then simply click on the "copy"

Now... Come over to the box you are typing your new post in.. You can start typing away, and at any point just place your curser where you want the image to be, and then "right click" with your mouse and hit "paste"

So what you will see is something like this..

Code:

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7222/7156835157_6b09bde2a3.jpg

Just add the BB image codes to the front and back of that url.. So it looks like this..

Code:

[img]http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7222/7156835157_6b09bde2a3.jpg[/img]

Notice the additional forward slash for the one on the rear of the code.

You will now be able to view the image either after hitting the "preview" mode or "post" tabs ..

Lets see if this gets ya going  Wink

Gina:

Very nice collection, a couple of quick comments:

The first bottle is, based on pictures, soapstone, so it should not be classed with the organics.
The wooden bottle is, I think, bamboo veneer.
My guess is that your oldest bottles are the soapstone, the carved walnut (very nice!) and the bamboo bottles. All nineteenth century.  The others are probably twentieth century - or more recent.

You might want to join the International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society and attend the convention in Portland this October.  You would meet a lot of people who are enthusiastic and knowledgeable and would happily help you in building your collection.

Good luck!

Thanks Ted,

I have had all but 2 since 1995 so they cannot be newer than that.  I picked up the green and pink flower bottle and the white with blue scene at a thrift shop for $5 just recently so they could be really new.  Thanks for the info on the others.  Do you have any idea what the large brown one is?  It is heavier than the others and cool to the touch.  Also, i believe the 2 bamboo IP bottles are the same artist - I will try to photograph the writing soon.

Hi Gina

I would  encourage  you to join  the  ICSBS  - at least  for a  year  or  two  to see  what you can  learn

No need  to  join  "for  life" unless  you find  it  useful

In the  initial  phase  of  collecting  it's  essential  to brush  shoulders   with  as  many other  collectors  as  possible and  learn  from them

Then   decide   which  direction to go  in your  collecting

I wish I had  taken my  own  advice   6 -7   years  ago !  If so  , I  would  not  have bought  2/3  of  my collection

DON'T  PANIC  -    great  bottles   will  always  be  on  sale   by    various   channels , so never  rush

Cheers

Peter

I have sold and have seen similar ones labeled as "Hatian Jade".. Not entirely sure that is correct. It could just be an unkown hardstone of some kind.

I think you will find it is extra heavy because it is not hollowed out.. Would not be surprised if there is simply a small hole just deep enough to accomodate the stopper.. Not likely even enough room for a spoon.  Seems to be the case with these bottles..  They are beautifully carved pieces of art, but never seem to have been intended to actually be used to possibly store snuff in..

i will explore joining the snuff society - will do it today.  the brown bottle is hollowed.  in fact, it has an ivory spoon attached to the stopper which appears to be the original.  The bottle was used.  what is interesting is the spoon is stained a bit, a reddish color.

Peter - found the ICSBS site...will be joining.  Regarding the comment about chosing a "specialty", I like them all.  not sure how I can choose one art form over the other..I suppose over time I will gravitate towards one but what i find fascinating about them is that each is an individual piece of artwork.  Very few collectibles are so unique.  I went to an estate sale yesterday in bedford NY - extremely affluent area just north of greenwich ct.  The home owners were obviously well to do - many fine antiques but the woman collected everything bunny rabbit (was hoping to find a snuff in the mix-no luck)...why, i do not know.  the bunnies were overwhelming...point being that i dont think that viewing a collection of snuff bottles would ever make you want to leave the room!

Gina:

Going with a wide collection of all sorts of snuff bottles is well grounded in snuff bottle tradition - all of the great collections that have books on them have a little (sometimes a lot!) of all the various types of bottles.  If you are interested, there is a bunch of books that are on the ICSBS web site, otherwise, I am sure that many of us could make recommendations for you.

As for bunnies, I can tell you that there is a group of jade carved snuffs in animal shapes that crop up from time to time, including bunnies.

Above all, have fun!

I would agree wholeheartedly with Ted's last message, especially the last line.
I started collecting all types of snuff bottles, 42+ years ago (at 13). After 21 years of general collecting, I decided to focus on three categories of snuff bottles I'd always especially loved: inside painted; blue & white porcelain; and nephrite jade snuff bottles. It has been very enjoyable, limiting myself in this way, but every once in a while, I will see a bottle in another material, which I MUST have! I get it, and add it to a small group of bottles of assorted materials, which I retained, either because of sentimental reasons, or because they'd not sold, and I still felt a connection when I saw them again.
  Enjoy!

I just came across this thread for the first time today. I wonder what happened to Gina? I see she is labeled as "guest". Did she ever register with the Forum? She has some interesting bottles...

Hi Tom

I believed Gina did registered herself sometime ago but because of inactivity, she was removed from the Members list and reverted to Guest.

Just my guess.
