I am not familiar with this word, and not able to identify what it might actually be..

   It is 'Shagreen' and means (usually green-) dyed sharkskin.

George,

Joey's definition is absolutely correct. I would only add that 'Shagreen' is often not made from real sharkskin, but the dried skin of (sting) ray or dogfish.

Having said that, the material in the photo doesn't look like shagreen. It looks far too smooth, and the lighter colored flecks are too irregular in shape. Also, the form of this bottle is impractical for the application of shagreen, which needs to be wetted and stretched over the base bottle, on which it shrinks as it dries (think 'shrink-wrap'). Those inside corners would be almost impossible to do!

The finish here appears to be a dark lacquer, inlaid with minute flakes of a light green slightly iridescent material, most probably over a wood body. If the bottle is too heavy for wood, then it is possibly a ceramic body under the lacquer.
