I’m currently cataloging this bottle and need a translation of the Chinese script.  If Steven and/or Walter could provide some help it would be appreciated.  Without going to any effort do either of you recognize the story behind the painted scene.  Just need to be pointed in the right direction to pursue the follow-up information.

This is one of those Apollo bottles I was referring to which was purchased from the ‘The Peaceful Trading Co.’ in the UK.  This company was peddling Apollo IPB’s for a number of years.

Thank you for the assistance and all comments are welcome, Charll

Hi Charll,

Beautiful bottle as always!

Inscription can be read"Chen tang Gate, Li Jing fighting with Tai yi zhen ren, painted by wang nan(王楠) in winter of 2003"

The reversed side can be read" The Investiture of the Gods, painted by wang tie min(王铁民)" which is wang nan's real name.

The story is from a famous fairy book"The Investiture of the Gods"

The illustrated side is wonderful; the reverse I don't understand. Why didn't the artist do a side of calligraphy? His calligraphy is quite good. Joey

As always, THANK YOU STEVEN!  Charll

P.S.-Joey, to answer your question, it is my opinion is this bottle is only production grade quality painted in quanties for export promotion.

Charll, You are probably right, but the guy invested the effort to do a wonderfully painted warrior scene, with a very good inscription; I would have thought that he'd have the pride in his craft to 'finish' the reverse. Maybe it is just me.

Just a side info on the years 199x-2005 in MIPB... often there would be only one side painted, with the back only having the signature and date... often in English too.  I have several like these, probably a dozen or so, and never could figure out why. Another artist who did this was Zhang Li Ming (featured in CIPMA or WXS son's books...)

I too   have  come   across    occasional  bottles   where  one  side  (  picture) was  painted  by  one  artist  and the  others  side  ( characters) was  painted  by another  artist

Peter,
Is each side signed then, by a different artist?

Sorry   Joey

I can't  remember   exactly   ( but  I  think  so)

But    the    actual  artists  are    certainly   somewhere  in the  provenance

From the calligraphy, it seems quite clear to me that the reverse side was written by a different artist.  Look at the character "Wang" 王, the styles are quite different on both sides.

IMO, I do not understand why they couldn't just leave the reverse side blank.  The inscription is not adding any value, except maybe the full name of the artist?  The exact date?  It is positively ugly, especially with the thick red line!

FYI.  the Red-line (s) and actual English name or other writing was also very common in those days, and I have to look at the details but several of my Zhang Li Min bottles have the same style of writing, and I suspect that ONE person at Apollo took care of all this back face 'writing'... Will follow it up.

As to why only one face was painted, I am guessing that this was done to appeal to Western buyers with clearer dating and writing and/or to keep the prices of the bottles down (basically took only half the time to paint).  The latest dated bottle I have in my collection that has this is from Zhang Li Min (operating under several pen names based on subject again, Zhang Li Min, Rui Zhi, Xiao Xi, Jiang Hua, Yu Ran) in 2007.

Please check the back of these bottles from Yan Run Feng:

Hey  Pat

Interesting  you  picked on that bottle  from Bill's  web  site as an  example

I  knew there   were a  couple  of  such ones    there  when I saw this  thread the other   day ,  but  I had no way to  access   them  quickly

Really   weird  : one  side   so beautiful and the  other  side   so ugly ( not  even    level)

Cheers   Peter

This is the first of a few bottles just purchased that are painted on one side with script and English text on the reverse.

Although not a collector of M, or VM bottles, there were several being offered by a Nephew selling off his Uncles collection that caught my eye.

Maybe with help translating the script, may find this bottle and a few others that will share are Liu Yizi student bottles.  The Nephew recalled his Uncle would commission works through six Yizi students. Cutting pictures from magazines for the students to paint.

I have not been able to match a signature up to Peter's DB.

Really thought this painting quite nice and believe could be considered abstract as Peter mentioned the Liu Yizi school is known for ..
