The shape of the bottle struck me as being old, and the painting does appear pretty nice !

Cute little guy ..  Smiley

It just came up as a buy now, so took a chance ..

Lets see if my first impression paid off..

Have tried as best I can, but just can't make out the signature.. Maybe the last charactor is zhan.. ?

The charactors that seem like they should represent the date just don't match up or make sense when I try to compare ..

The closest I can make out is Keng hsi  , 1910 1970 ??

Ok.. Time to school me guys !   Cheesy

This is all I am able to pull off the eBay listings one and only pic.

Hi George,

I offered a $15.00 for the bottle, no wonder that I can't get it, that is all because of you---:)

Nice painting, sure worth $25.00, I was so cheap Grin Grin

This is a modern bottle for sure, like I mentioned before, WXS is the first artist who paint the detail fur of the cat.

Nice one to your collection!!!

The bottle was painted by "wen chang" no date on the bottle.

Hi  Steven

Yes -  and much better  than an early   WXS  cat bottle  that was   reported to have been sold  for  US$ 60,000  (RMB500,000)   a few  years  ago  at a Chinese   auction  !

That's    EXACTLY  my point  about  VERY  MIPBs  : the   quality  is   100  x  better   than anything  painted   30 years  ago, or  even   20 years   ago  (and  at least   10 x  better  than anything  painted  10  years  ago)

I  personally  ( and I  do mean   STRICTLY PERSONALLY)    don't put  any  great  value on  old / semi-old  / big name artist  bottles .

I  buy bottles  only for  their inherent  beauty and   skill , and  "quality  of  painting".    So when  I show    visitors    my collection   I don't  say  " This  bottle  is  by  XYZ    super-famous  artist   painted   UV..W years  ago  , and  worth  $ABCDE"

I just   say  :   "  Isn't this bottle   absolutely  amazingly beautiful !? "

In fact  I  usually don't  bother to  tell the  visitor  who painted the  bottle  - unless  the  visitor  asks, and  then I usually  say   "it's an  artist  whom   you    probably  have not  heard of "   ( which is  usually the  case )  because   so few collectors these  days  collect for  PURE  BEAUTY

Now  ...  I know this  comment  will  raise  some hackles , so  please  let me state to  one all    that  every collector  has  every  right to collect  for  every  reason .

So please  just  put  me  in  another  "boat"   that is  sailing  in the  same  general  direction ....  towards  a universal  appreciation  of   MIPBs

OK- la?

Cheers  Peter

I was a cheap skate on her second bottle !

Offered 10.00 for the other, and she let me have it.. Probably because I did not make an offer on this one, and just snagged it up..

Thanks very much for the artist info !

Hi Peter,

I am with you... My another hobby besides the snuff bottle is eating ,although I am not fat at all:)

I love chinese food, french food, mexican food,  italian food...

For Chinese food, my favorite is sichuan dishes, and Yue( guangdong) dishes, Xiang(hu nan) dishes...

It really hard to for me compare with them each other, since I love them all, they all have their own special taste.... Grin Grin ;DSo I just enjoy them with different pespectives. Tongue

Hi Steven

Seems   we   have  TWO  hobbies  in common !

And  if it's a  choice between    a  spicy  Sichuan  hotpot  and  a  Yue   sea food  meal,  well  of course,  I  eat BOTH of them !

 Grin

Thought I might share the reverse side of this bottle..

If one of our expert translators stumble in here, and can decipher the scripts for me ?  That would be fantastic  Smiley

The other side's title: "Kitten having fun"

And the inscription: "The year of 1992, the month of March, in the Capital, painted by Wen Cang"

Do the Chinese like cats? I know they were favoured for cleaning up vermin, but rats are cherished in ancient Chinese culture aren't they?

Think of the nodding Cat figurines for luck in Chinese and Japanese restaurants, etc.
There are many auspicious symbols. I think I'm going to have to move some of my reference texts up to my study from my library.

To  ALL

Rats   are  big  thing  in Chines   culture

The   RAT  is  one  of  the   12    cyclical   animals,  and  I  am   RAT,  having been  born 9.1948

I  tell  you,    there  is   a  huge  amount  of   "stuff'  in that  Chinese   12  -  year   calendar   cycle    :  it  make     zero  sense  to  modern  Physics, but     SH1T   it  works  in practice  . Don't  ask me  how

Cats  :   they  have never  been  painted   well , with  a  very  few   exceptions.  I once  had   8  x  Persian  cats   as    pets,  so  I  know

Check  Youtube  " Very   Funny      Cat  Unprovoked    attack"

Cheers  Peter
