Hi   All

About  one  year   ago  a   humble guy  -  George  by name  -    in West   coast  USA   decided  to  AGAIN  collect   snuff bottles , said  George   had  already    stopped   collecting    snuff bottles    and   sold  off   all  his   previous  collection.

But   said  George    had  been   smitten  by   THE   BUG, so behind  the back  of  his  girlfriend, he  started  to  collect  again
( sorry dear  girl friend  if  you  ever  read  this, but    I also   secretly  collect  behind  the  back  of  my  Chinese   wife...  such  is  the   ADDICTION   of    snuff bottles .....but  actually  she  knows  but  pretends  not  to  know )

George  was pretty  computer-  savvy   so  he took  a   freebie  on-line software   package  and   opened  a   FORUM    for   snuff bottles  discussion

Today  -  if  you   Google  " SNUFF  BOTTLE  FORUM"   George's    Forum   comes   up as  No 1  hit... and  bear  in mind  that  Google  rates   websites  not  just  by    exact  "name"  but also  by direct / followed -up   hits =   popularity   worldwide

One  can  manipulate  Google   "hits"   with money, and  thus end  up  top  of the  hit  list  on  Google. But   this  George  guy  had  no such money thus  the  listing  at  the  top  of 88,200  hits ( based  on  current  last check   today)  was  no mean  feat !  WOW  !

A  couple of months  after  the  Forum  launched   someone  ( I forget  who)    told  me  about  it  and  I  logged  on

It  was  not  "perfect"  insofar  that  I  had  been  thinking of  setting  up   something   along  the  same  lines  for  over  2  years.  But    seeing  that  this  guy  "George"  had  already   started   a  Forum  it  took  only  a  micro-second  to    decide  to  join  in  and   contribute as  positively as  possible,  which  I  think  I  can now  claim to have  done  par  excellence . (Check  the  log-in  times  on the  site   statistics   for  evidence   thereof. I am  there  en  claire    with my  real name   unlike  most  other   Forum members   who  prefer  to  remain anonymous  - and  I  have   no  hang-ups   with that  )

A  year  or  so  previously,  having   started  collecting  Modern   Inside  Painted   Bottles  ( MIPBs)   in  earnest  in  the  mid   2000's     I was  of  course    drawn  to  to the  ICSBS.  This  also  was  not "perfect"   because  I  could  not  find  anything  about  MIPB  artists   in the   journals  (and  it   was/ is expensive  to  join  this   International  Society ,  whereas  George's    Forum   was   free)

Now  I get   the  ICSBS  Journal  3 x  per  year  :  it's a  beautiful  journal  and  I  even  personally  know   the  publisher , whose  office  is  a   stone's   throw  from my  office  in  Hong  Kong

I  read  the   journal  in  just one  hour  =  3  hours  per  year

But   I spend    at least  one  hour  -  often  2  hours   PER  DAY     corresponding   with   fellow  collectors   on   George's  Forum,  and  also  by  private   emails.

So which is    the  more  important  in  my  life ?    You   can  guess  my  answer

There  has  been   some  recent  "antagonism"    (maybe that's a  too  strong  word)   re  the   Forum   vs  the   ICSBS

Hackles   have been   raised,  and  hackles  once  raised   are hard  to    put  back   down.

How can   the   Forum   in  any way  possible   be   a threat  to  the  ICSBS  when   the    Forum  home  page  carries   a    freebie   advert  encouraging  every   Forum member   to  JOIN  the   ICSBS  !?

How  much  closer   can the   Forum   get to  the  ICSBS  ?

WE  ON THE   FORUM   EMBRACE   YOU  @ THE  ICSBS   TEN   THOUSAND   %   !

Why   don't  you  embrace   us ?

Cheers

Matthew   5: 9

" Blessed are the  peace-makers  because    they  shall be  called  Sons  of   God"

Seems   I  have  booked my  place  in  Heaven....

Jesus  got   it   right,  and  whether  Jew  or   adopted    Western    guy,  he   spoke  the   TRUTH

Isn't   REAL  life   so  wonderful ?

( and   so  is  spell-check )

Cheers

Peter

Peter, in 2001, Steve Carroll, who at the time was living in Beijing and working for Motorola, wrote a profusely illustrated article on Liu Yizi, the VMIP artist (son of Liu Ziyi, also a well-known  VMIP artist, who sadly died in Nov. 2001).
Best, Joey

Hi  Joey

Glad  we  are   gathering  some  momentum !   Grin

Re Liu  Yizi ......  very interesting   what  you   wrote  .  ( Also  I had a lot  of  dealings  with  Motorala, but  ina  different  area  , I guess, from  Steve   Carrol.  I can't  find  him as a current  member  of the  ICSBS.

I would  love to  see that  article  and  - copyright  permitting  -   include it  my   data base

Was it an ICSBS  article?

But actually,  I  think I  have  one better  -  I recently bought  a very rare book of  Liu Yizi's  bottles  from David Osborne

I only  just  got  it ,  but it    quite a  thick book and  crammed  with pics.  I  have not yet had  time to  scan it  to my  DB  but will   do  so  later this  year .

Personally  I don't like  Li Yizi's work, but   he  was   a very influential  painter, so it seems

Cheers    Peter

BTW : do you  have  the   famous   Orange and  Grey  books  bu    Wang Ziyong  (  son of  WXS) ?  They  came  out  after  CIPMA   and   give a  lot more   detail - and pics  -     about  the top  VMIPB  artsits, although  unfortunately  only  in Chinese

Yes, Steve Carroll's article was in the Journal, Spring or Summer of 2001. Thanks to it, I bought a few Liu Yizi, and then bought more at Houston Con 2001, and a few more (and some students' bottles), in Chicago, where I went after the convention, and by coincidence Liu Yizi and his American escort, Steve's younger brother, who is from Chicago, had gone as well. In a really eery additional coincidence, he demonstrated his technique in the Columbia College art gallery, run at the time by a dear friend, who I'd gone there to see. So after spending 5 days with them in Houston, I saw them again for 2 days in Chicago! And my friend there, Bill Drendel, had no prior connection with IP SBs. Freaky, huh?!

Does the Grey volume have a portrait bottle of an Emperor on the cover, and the Orange a Cat & Butterfly subject on its cover?
Then yes, but  since I don't read Chinese, I'm reduced to looking at pictures (pleasing but frustrating). I'm going to try matching photos of artists in CIPMA with those in the Grey and Orange books.

Hi Joey

Yes, those  are the  2  books

Don't bother  comparing   CIPMA  with those   2  books.   The  grey  and orange  books  contained much better   and mostly later  examples of the   artists'  works  . And also     some more   top artists   who  skipped  CIPMA .

There  may be   a  few  overlaps, but  not many

Anyway................   It's  all in the  DB   which  is    sorted  by  artist, not  by subject :-)

You should  get your  copy  this week unless  it's been sent  by    mule   along the  silk  road

' (3) Wise  men   came from the   East.... " ( but that  was  before  microsoft)

Cheers  Peter

I also was informed that my book has arrived in Shanghai, but I have a lot of international travel coming this month, so I will not get to it until end of the month or so.  Thanks again!
