薛京万 Xue Jingwan

Xue Jingwan, alias Fu Chen, the son of Xue Xiangdu --- the old master of inside painting art, with the title of “Old Handicraftsman”, was born on Bodie Street in Boshan in 1893, and died in 1987 when he was ninety-five years old.

At the age of fourteen he began to learn inside painting art from his father. He could paint mountain and water, flower and bird, and people very well, but specially opera figures and warriors and he created his own style --- bold and unconstrained way of using brush, distinct and moist in dark ink, and satisfactory composition. In 1956 the Boshan Colored Glaze Cooperation Factory invited Xue Jingwan and Zhang Wentang to recover the production of inside painted snuff bottles, and took in students and taught them skills, which gave Lu School a new life.

According to the requirement of the department of foreign trade Xue Jingwan experimented and produced successfully the first inside painted snuff bottle with baked color[1] in 1957, which made it come true that the pictures was not destroyed after being watered and the picture would not fade the color after a long time. During making this bottle Xue Jingwan invented the brush for inside painting according to the characters of the color of porcelain. This kind of brush was suitable not only for writing, but also for painting. In April 1966 his apprentices, Li Kechang and Sun Jijie, with his niece, Xue Xixiang showed Wang Xisan and Liu Shouben and other artists how to use the brush in Beijing. Later this kind of brush was used widely in Beijing and Hebei Province. The invention of the brush is an important milestone in the development of inside painting art, also it is the greatest achievement of Xue Jingwan, and has been recorded in the history.

Xue Jingwan engaged in inside painting art in his all life and the apprentices that he taught have become the great and famous Masters, such as Li Kechang, Wen Xiangjun, Wang Jiquan, Wu Jianzhu, Zhang Guangzhong, Wang Xiaocheng and Chen Dongshun etc. who then formed Shandong School.

In order to commend Xue Jingwan’s outstanding contribution he attended the National Arts & Crafts handicraftsman Congress and was interviewed by Zhude in 1957 and won a medal. The Shangdong government gave him the title of “Old Handicraftsman” and he was selected as the member of Zibo People’s Political Consultative Conference and the standing committeeman of Zibo People’s Political Consultative Conference four times.
