I want to post my second nephrite bottle. Unfortunately, it has a chip in the lip. I am sure that degrades the value but, I included this in my purchase because of the shape.

The height is 50mm. It is 17.5mm at its widest. One of the photos is back lit to show translucency.

I saw similar bottles dated around early 19th century. What do you think?

Generally, how do chips like this affect the overall value of snuff bottles? 50% or more?

Love these flattened bottles Stew..

Gosh, someone would almost have had to use a hammer to accomplish that chip. Jade is pretty hard to break like this.

Will leave it to others to help you date this and suggest how that chip affects its value, but regardless it is a wonderful bottle.

Stew,

This is nice!

George,

What's the story on the flat sided bottle?  Fit into the Manchu rider's boots?

Cheers,

Rube.

I do recall someone mentioning about the fitting into boots,  but I also think a lot about the shape is how perfect and comfortable it fits/feels in ones hand..

Nice jade bottle, very white! regarding to the age, it looks modern to me, because the picture of the mouth show that the bottle maybe is not very well hollowed, I saw it on a modern jade bottles.

Best,
Albert.

Dear Albert,

I am not sufficiently experienced to know whether my bottle is well hollowed. I took some measurements and found that there is a consistent 4.7 mm inside outline around the flat of the bottle (see photo). The thickness of the flat walls are consistently 3mm. You can see my photo.

The mouth may look too thick but, there is an 8 mm tunnel going into the bottle as there is a 5mm neck.

Not sure whether this helps date it.

For providence, I can only confirm that it is at least 30 years as the person who previously owned it had it for that long.

Dear Stewsnuff,

I'm not an expert on jade snuff bottles, indeed, I never have had one jade SB, but I have seen to many on the books, antiques shops and on internet, and it's looks a bit strange to me. I'm sure that the others members of the forum can help you better than me. Any way, strange to me Grin!

Best,
Albert.

Stew,

Giovanni has a brilliant way of looking inside a bottle:  He uses an led strip light from a hardware store and sticks it in the bottle, which illuminates it really well, thus showing inside profiles.

I need to try it, myself.

Cheers,

Rube.

Stew,

When I saw your bottle, after reading the description, I said, "SH*T! What a great bottle. Damned shame that it is damaged. I would date it 1780-1850, and say it is a beautiful example I'd be proud to own, if it was not damaged.

And unlike Albert, who has zero Jade SBs [sorry, Albert] , I have over 80! And at least 50 of mine are Palace Workshops or Imperial Court tribute. I think this one is also Palace Workshops in origin.

I have had damaged bottles repaired with gold lacquer. It is an East Asian conceit of accentuating the existence of the damage, and basically flaunting it, as a way of portraying love of the object, its history, its beauty and its provenance; its damage notwithstanding.

It is traditionally used to repair B & W Porcelain, but I've used it to great success with a shadow agate I own, etc. I think it would work with white nephrite jade, as well.

    Best,
Joey

Thank you for the suggestion Joey, I will bring my bottle to the upcoming HK arts show to see whether I can find someone to do that lacquer repair on the lip.

Dear Stew,

Check Japanese and S. Korean, as well as Chinese craftsmen.
Good luck. And if you find a good craftsman, please let me know.
I had an Emerald Green Jadeite snuff dish, a gift from the late John Ault z"l,
repaired this way, and it was brilliant.
Best,
Joey

Hi Stew,

Nice botttle you have !

Any possibility of you taking a close-up picture of the short-necked area of your bottle ? Just curious how the it was carved and polished there,

Thanks.

Stew,

I agree with Joey's dating for your bottle, and that it is possibly Palace workshops.
It is a beauty, and will benefit greatly from the gold repair suggested.
