After reading your pinned post "Underglazed Blue and Copper Red Designs" I thought I'd post this blue and red I acquired as part of a collection of Chinese items. It is approximately 5 cm in diameter and 7 cm high. These were purchased in the early eighties by the seller.

I'd like to ask whether this red looks good. What is the date?

What is the motif that is depicted? Seems to me to be an armed intrusion into someone's private quarters.

A note ... There is a yellow blotch on one of the figures sitting down in the first photo. In actuality, it is less pronounced than the photo shows though still yellowish-white.

Nice one Stew !

Underglaze blue and copper-red that pretty sure can be dated to late 18th to early 19th, and yes.., the red looks fine..

I can not help with the scene.. Hopefully someone will recognize it for you..  The one character with the round eyes is pretty strange.. Can I see a good frontal pic of him ?

Dear Stew,
a nice bottle and surely old.
The yellowish spot is not the only one. There are other points within the red glaze with yellowish - greenish hoe.
That is normal in underglaze copper red ware, because it is difficult to fire it correctly. It is typical, I would say.
Kind regards

Stew,

It would be my opinion that this bottle is late 19th to early 20th century (1880 to Republican Period).  The bottle's motif style is fairly common.  Though your bottle appears to be a bit stubby in stature which I have not seen much in this bottle genera, so that is a bit unusual.  The wide/large eyed figure my be a portrayal of the Monkey King.

Here we go,

The wide-eyed guy certainly does look like Monkey. The tall one to the right, the priest. Not sure about the mean-looking dude. And, I am not sure about the item that they are protecting but, that yellow might be intentional, do you think? A precious item of sorts? Need to review my Monkey story.

For what it is worth Stew...  If Charll tells us it should be dated late 19th to early 20th, then you can bet he is correct, and I am 100 years off ..

He knows his porcelain !

Dear Stew,
I am sure that the yellowish spot is not intentional. It is absolutely common to have those yellowish, greenish or brownish spots in underglaze copper red ware.
If there is only that spot, it means that your bottle is a well fired one.
Kind regards

Stew,

Nice bottle! Just curious, what sort of stopper would you pick to pair with this?

Some of these bottles were fitted with mediocre stoppers. I doubt that they were the originals. There is an antique show coming to Hong Kong at the end of the month. Some is usually there selling caps so, maybe I'll do a bit of shopping.

Stew,

I'd love to see what you end up with.

I actually have a very similar bottle with an ivory and coral stopper. I think it's a great combo. I'm not biased or anything though.  Grin

That's a cool one.

I might go for mono colors on mine. I have a few to buy.

But, will check what they have at the show.

Dear Brian,

That stopper, while wonderful, is NOT Coral & [Elephant] Ivory; it is Coral and Walrus Ivory. Because most people are more familiar with Elephant Ivory, it is best to add 'Walrus' to your description.

      Best,
Joey
