Hi Everyone,

With all the recent discussion about Sylvan and Faith Golder,  I thought I'd share another bottle from their collection.  It measures 2 1/2" w/o stopper and has a concave lip and raised foot with a slightly recessed convex base.  It's my first (actually "our" first) shadow agate bottle, as my brother and I liked it so much, we've decided to share it as a migrating bottle between our two collections, and are calling it a "raven on the rock" bottle.

As an added bonus, yesterday, I was fortunate to make the acquaintance of Stewart Golder and his wife Margaret!  It was really nice chatting with them, and look forward to meeting them again in Cincinnati. Margaret is very active with the Asian Art Society of Cincinnati, and there are many wonderful exhibits showcased at the Cincinnati Art Museum.  From them, I bought many fine snuff bottle books, which I'm anxious to study.
I'm including two pictures of one, however, because I have no idea who the author is?  It's never revealed in the book, so, I wondering if someone can help me identify the owner of the collection?

Cheers,

Rube.

Hi Rube,

Wonderful bottle. I remember that one in the auction. I had flagged it, but ended up not bidding, since I had my eye on a couple of others lots.

The book is by Harriet Hamilton, showcasing her own collection. I didn't realize that she hadn't revealed her identity in it. Strange, because there is her portrait inside!

Best,
Tom

Dear Rube,

     Beautiful bottle! Congratulations.
Harriet Hamilton was a grandchild or great grandchild of Klaus Spreckels, the 'Sugar king' of Maui, and he also built the Del Coronado Hotel, in Coronado CA.
Best,
Joey

Dear Rube,

Could you please send me contact info for Stewart and Margaret Golder? I'd like to send them a condolence message.
Thanks,
Joey

Rube,

The book of which I have two copies and porcelain bottle out of the collection (Lot P-60) is: Harriet Morse Hamilton Collection, ‘Oriental Snuff Bottles’, a book Ms. Hamilton published in the 1970’s of a portion of her collection.  The portrait is of Harriet Morse Hamilton.

Charll

P.S.- As mentioned elsewhere on Facebook, the shadow agate bottle is a great piece.

Hi Everyone,

This is not a recent acquisition, but the forum has been rather quiet lately, so I thought I'd add a shadow agate to this thread from my collection:

Diving Carp
Semi-transparent pale grey agate with dark brown inclusions; of well hollowed, elongated rectangular form with a cylindrical neck, concave lip and a recessed oval foot surrounded by a wide footrim; the natural darker markings in the stone lightly edited to create a silhouette design of a diving carp. Mother-of-pearl stopper set in a gilt-silver collar.

Height  6.0 cm w/o stopper

Tentative dating: 1780-1850

The carp (li) is a rebus for profit (also li), hence its popularity in various forms to be found on Chinese snuff bottles.

Provenance:
The Avon Collection
Amazon Rooks (prior to 1970)
----------------------------------

All best,
Tom

Tom,

Thanks for sharing such lovely bottle. The craftsman executed the interior finishing very well to bring out the fish.
