Welcome Brian!  We look forward to having you aboard.  Rick it is so good to hear from you!  I agree with you 100% about our friend Joey!  This snuff bottle group would lack a lot without his knowledge, willingness to share and his unique sense of humor.  I look forward to hearing more from you Brian.
Thanks Jo! I hope I don't disappoint. Smiley

Hi Brian,

This is Bob Lee from Jin Hing.  Sorry for pushing you and your parents out of the store last month.  I thought you should not miss the local snuff bottle meeting that was next store at Richard Liu's office.  The So Calif group doesn't meet that often.  I thought you would come back after the meeting.

Hi Bob,
Sorry for the delay in responding, this somehow slipped past me. Please don't feel bad at all. It was just an amazing coincidence that my parents decided to take me to your store on a whim while I was briefly in town and there was a snuff bottle meeting going on around the corner. What are the odds!? I very much enjoyed the meeting and it was nice meeting Richard, Clare Chu, and everyone else there. I wish I could continually go, but living in Milwaukee precludes that. Unfortunately, we had to run after the meeting so didn't get a chance to come back after. I'll be in LA at the end of December. I'll try to stop by again.  Smiley

Dear Brian [and everyone else!],

The ICSBS convention is in Minneapolis MN this year, from 17-21.Sept. [the post-convention trip is on Sat.21st].

We are having an election 'redo' [we got a truly overwhelming rightwing majority, but one guy [Liberman, Yisrael Beitenu {Israel Is Our Home}]  decided to be a problem, so a new election on 17.Sept.!
I will vote, then jump on a plane to Toronto at 11:45am, and then another to Minneapolis, and get in by 22:00.
I'll miss the first day sadly, but the rest of the convention will make up for it.

Brian, I know you teach in Milwaukee, but can you make at least part of it?
Best,
Joey

Hi Joey,

Absolutely, I'll be there. I'm building it into my class schedules this semester. Grin  I'm driving over from Milwaukee first thing Tuesday morning and leaving Friday afternoon. I won't be able to make the gala regrettably. I'm very excited. First one I've been at since 1984! Haha.

Dear Brian,

     Brilliant!
We'll meet on Wed. - since I will be arriving into MSP on Tues. around 22:00 on Air Canada from Israel via Toronto.
Looking forward to it. And the Final Banquet, while very nice, is not the thing. The lectures and the socialising, AND the shopping [or window shopping] in the Dealers' Room, is what I love about the Conventions.
And I've been to 35 conventions or so.
I missed the first 5, since I was not yet a member. The next 4, I missed, because either my parents or the Israel Defence Forces were unreasonable - 1974, was my final year at high school, with the resultant examinations; and from Aug.1975 to mid.-Oct.1978, I was serving in the IDF.  Roll Eyes Grin

Since Oct.1978 in Hong Kong, I've missed 5, for personal reasons which were more important than snuffbottles - conflicts with my religious obligations, or when I was in the year of mourning for a parent, etc.
But I love the convention each year. And one of the most important parts, is meeting old friends and new ones, and shmoozing with them. And talking snuffbottles with them.

Best,
Joey

Joey,

Wow, you certainly have a storied past with the convention. I've only been to one 35 years ago and I can barely remember it (I was only 14!).

I'm definitely going to have to hide my checkbook from myself. I'll be like a kid in a (really expensive) candy store!

Dear Brian,

    "A storied past..."!
You don't know the half of it.
The 1985 Dallas post-convention 'trip' (2 museums before lunch, a fine lunch in a country club, and another museum after lunch). John Ford had screwed up, and got the times and venues wrong.
We were supposed to be at museum #3 first; then #1; and only after lunch, #2!
As a result, we sat around outside at each place, and the lunch was at a Gentile (non-Jewish) club, so the alcohol was great, if one imbibed; I don't.
But the food was mediocre.
Jackie Mason says, "eat at a Jewish club and drink at a Gentile club!"
But it was a great day - we got to shmooze all day long!
Best,
Shabbat Shalom,
Joey

Joey,

I mis-read the quote and thought, "What the heck is a Jewish club sandwich? Have I been missing out on something?" Haha  Grin

Dear Brian,

A "Jewish Club Sandwich" is just like a regular one, but then a Jew who eats it is supposed to feel guilty for eating the bacon!  Roll Eyes Shocked Grin
