Hi all Smiley

Been a long time since have purchased any bottles.  So this is a great time to post one I stumbled upon also say hi.. It looks good alongside with some brown and black glaze ceramics have been learning about.

19th c, famille noire snuff bottle, with coral and jade stopper, and ivory spoon. 3" tall not including the stopper.

These famille noire bottles always have the most unusual paintings. I have no idea what the meaning is behind the person within the window of the saddle blanket and the rider looking in.

Enjoy !

Dear George,

    Welcome back!
It looks more like the person is in a big saddlebag, rather than a saddleblanket.
Best,
Joey

George,

Interesting!  Here is mine.

Porcelain Famille Niore Snuff Bottle:
A Chinese porcelain snuff bottle with famille noire enamel decoration of two horses with a mother inspecting child(?).  Cylinder form with a short neck.  Orange agate stopper with black collar.  No mark on base.   Height 3 1/8".

Period: circa 1880 ± 10 years

Condition: Some wear to glaze on body and particularly buffed at the shoulder and base.

Provenance:  Quinn’s Auction Galleries, June 9, 2012 Sale, Lot 473
From the Collection of John W. Sinclair, California.   Purchased from Dennis Crow, 1988.

Pictures are from the auction house and are not that great.  When I get the chance I'll see if I can provide better images.  Charll

Hi George,

Good to have a post from you, hope you are well.

I really like your (and Charll's) bottle, is it a reflection in a mirror ?

Regards, Adrian.

Hello Adrian, Rube, and Joey  Smiley

Charll...

It is really interesting indeed to see another similar painting on your bottle.  Seems like that would indicate that there is a specific meaning and not just a random scene..

Your guess for a "mother inspecting child" would make sense if Joey is correct and that is not a blanket but a saddlebag.  It does look like a child.

Nice bottles! What a strange decoration. I too think that Joey must be right, but I don't know the related meaning; it should belong from some story.
Dear Charll, I believe that these bottles could be also a bit earlier than 1880.
Kind regards
Giovanni

Hello George,

Nice to see you back! I like this bottle very much. An unusual theme, and one I have not seen before. But since Charll's example is so similar it must depict a specific episode from a classical story or fable.

I cannot find its origins in any of my reference books (child hidden in a saddle bag...?). Perhaps one of our Singapore members is familiar with the story.

Dear all,

Congratulations to George and Charll for such amazing bottles!

This one really beats me. I’ve never heard of any legend or idiom in relation to a child hiding (or being hidden) in a saddlebag. I can’t find any clue even after having searched both Google and Baidu (one of the most popular search engines in China). But the first thing that came into my mind when I saw the decoration was the story of Zhao Zilong (a.k.a. Zhao Yun, an important warrior of the Kingdom of Shu Han during the era of Three Kingsoms) rescuing the only son of his Lord Liu Bei (an infant) from the enemies which was mentioned in the literature of Romance if he Three Kingdoms which is one of the four Chinese literature classics. But then Zhao actually strapped the child around his body rather than hiding him in a saddlebag while escaping on a horse... so not quite the same as what is depicted on the bottles... Roll Eyes

Best to all,
Samson
