One of the bottles I won at the Galerie Zacke auction.

Red overlaid over bubble suffused clear ground. The overlay carved in fine detail as auspicious objects. Height 61mm. Stopper is of wood with bone or ivory inlays in a yin yang design. White metal collar over a very wide neck opening.

Regards, Adrian.

Dear Adrian,

Beautiful overlay, though the metal mount on the neck makes me believe there is damage to the original neck.

I love the bowl holding a Peach of Longevity, Pomegranate [symbolizing fertility], and the Buddha's Hand Fruit [Citrus Medica; also known as Etrog in Hebrew and in Jewish tradition].
Best,
Joey

Thanks Joey and Rube.

Not the best pictures to really show the level of detail which is impressive. I imagine there is damage around the neck as there are a couple of places where the overlay has been damaged.

Regards, Adrian.

Dear Adrian,

I forgot to give an estimated dating, etc.:
I would say, given the quality of the colour, the background polish, and the footrim,
ca. 1750-1800 and Imperial Glassworks.
Not as fine as Giovanni's Imperial Incised Blue Bubble Glass, but up there.
Best,
Joey

Dear Joey,

Thank you for the dates etc.

Shame about the couple of nicks to the overlay but I can certainly appreciate the quality of the workmanship.

Regards, Adrian.

Dear Adrian,
very nice bottle, well done despite the damage.
Thank you dear Joey for your opinion about my bottle. Those tree fruits together have a name in Chinese iconography, sanduo.
Kind regards
Giovanni

Dear Giovanni,

This can't be the first time I've stated that about your bottle.
But you are welcome.
Best,
Shabbat Shalom to all,
Joey

Hi all

Thanks, Adrian for posting this bottle and thanks to Giovanni for pointing out the Chinese name, Sanduo (三多) which means the abundance three.

The peach represents longevity, the pomegranate symbolizes fertility (many sons) and the Buddha's hand fruit more blessings.

For your reference.

Dear Richard,
    Thank you for the information.
We refer to the San Duo as, "The Three Abundances".
In Jewish tradition, the Pomegranate symbolises many good deeds, and
the Etrog, Citrus Medica [Buddha's Hand Fruit], is used on Sukkot, the Feast
of Booths or Tabernacles. Our Etrog fruit all look like a lemon with a knob on the
opposite end from the stem.
I'd NEVER seen one that looked like the Chinese examples, illustrated in Mrs.
Perry's book [creamy nephrite jade.  Magnificent!] for example. Or on this Overlay.
Till a new friend, Chris [Bligger] Simpson, a relatively recent member of the ICSBS,
posted photos of his Etrog tree!
Best,
Joey

Richard, thanks for explaining the meaning of Sanduo. This is an ivory bottle I have with the Three Abundances. Joey, Chris's tree is impressive!

John,

The carving is wonderful on that Ivory bottle,
but what dating do you give it?
And I love the 'Buddha's Hand Fruit', as well as
the Pomegranate and the Peach.
Best,
Joey

Joey, I would probably date it 1880 to 1930.

It's beautifully carved, John.
I was also thinking very late Qing to Republic of China
[ca. 1890 - 1935].
