Hi all

As mentioned by Inn Bok, I have a similar metal bottle with a similar subject of one of the eight immortals.

A photo of the 2 bottles is attached for your comparison.

However, mine was much oxidised and looked much darker. The shape of the bottles was also slightly different although they bear the same date or 1771.

In fact, I have posted the bottle before under the Snuff Bottle with Inscription thread:

http://snuffbottle.smfforfree.com/index.php/topic,1769.80.html

Here are the details:

A metal bottle of slender cylindrical form engraved with Han Xiangzi playing the flute under a tree together with a poem as follows:

玉萧吹彻凤凰鸣,
万里松涛送和声。
谁解引人入胜曲,
先抛虚利与实名。

It was signed by Jun Fu from Qiong Si (邛汜浚父) and dated 1771 (乾隆辛卯年). Height: 62 mm.

The photos cannot pick up the details of the design.

Han Xiangzi is a member of the Eight Immortals.

Enjoy!

Rube,

I bet that metal bottle feels great in the hand. Must admit I don't think I've ever seen a completely metal one before. I have seen the Mongolian Tibetan ones with metal embellishments though.

Lovely bottle.

Dear Brian,
I have a metal SB I purchased in May of this year, in Toronto.
It is Japanese,  'Repousse' [(of metalwork) hammered into relief from the reverse side.] in technique, and mid-late 19th C.

I've a friend from Japan who has a Canadian life partner, and deals mainly in Japanese works of art.
Best,
Shabbat Shalom,
Joey

This is the first metal bottle I've managed to add to my collection.

It is mixed metal in that it has silver detail added over the base metal. The base metal is odd in it's texture and I don't know what technique has been used but it looks almost fibrous for want of a better description. The subject is supposedly foreign soldiers. Height is 67mm minus the stopper which looks to have a silver or white metal spoon. The inside of the neck looks like the body may be copper or similar so the darker outside base metal may be blackened copper as there is copper showing in places deep in the scratched "hatching" on the surface.

I don't recall having seen anything like this before so any comments would be welcome.

Regards, Adrian.

I saw this one Adrian, and neither is the theme, or the designs around the shoulder, and neck familiar.

I am also very interested to learn if others know more about this one.

Congratulations !

Adrian,

I to like your bottle how tall is it? Is it light or heavy in the hand?

Hi George, Rube and Jason.

I found a silver inlaid oxidized copper bottle from the Ruth and Carl Barron collection that looks to have a similar blackness to the base metal but that's the closest I can find. I thought oxidized copper went more green than black !

It is heavy, very similar in weight to a cloisonne bottle I have of the same size.

Regards, Adrian.

Hi Adrian,

There was a similar bottle in the Harriet Hamiltion Collection. If you have her book 'Oriental Snuff Bottles', it's illustrated in there as number M-13.

And here is another from the collection of a friend. The silver inlay depicts a continuous scene of military figures and horses, contained between horizontal bands with a zig-zag motif.  I never handled the Hamilton bottle, but the one from my friend's collection stands 6.7 cm tall, and is noticeably heavy.

Two similar examples (but with a different motif) were sold by Sotheby's 22 March 1999, lot nos. 244 and 246.

Regards,
Tom
