Hello all,

I have another bottle I'd like to share for some opinions. It was listed by the seller as being wood (I'm not sure if they truly believed that or if they simply wanted to legally sell it) and I recognized it and thought possibly it was Hornbill due to the red tonal changes to a darker orange/tan to the light yellowish cream tone as Hornbill is generally shown. But upon inspection after I purchased it I noticed the grain which lead me to believe it is most likely stained ivory. I know that Hornbill can have such grain lines as well especially older when it starts to crack (see the side photo). I love it so either way its visually appealing to me and the texture is so supple and it's a pleasure to have in the hand. I'm certain that its inscribed with a poem. I have seen a few similar examples with Qianlong poems but usually they have his seal attached (except a white nephrite jade one I've seen at Christie's). If there is anyone that could translate it that would be an added bonus! Anyways any info or comments would be appreciated as always!

Dimensions - 6.5" H (w/o stopper) x 3.5" W (shoulders) x 2" D
Weight - 44.3g
Age - Unknown (but I am hoping pre-1950)

Dear Daniel,

It is stained ivory. Not trying to be Hornbill; just stained Ivory.
And it could be anywhere from 1935 to 1980, but more probably 1950-1975.
Best,
Joey

That is beautiful.  I am wondering, what can be seen in the photo that determines it is stained ivory?

Again, this forum is a treasure trove of information.

    Thank you,

Kaja,
I think the best picture is the second.

Cheers,

Thank you all!

Kaja,

The stained ivory comes from the changes in the red hue and the Schreger angles (crosshatch grain characteristic of elephant ivory) which are visible more so on the top but also the side as Rube pointed out.
