Hi again, I would like to hear your opinions on this double overlay snuff bottle with a mallow flower. I found quite a lot of bottles with this decoration, and a few with such bamboo stalk handels... Height is 5.5 cm. Does it have any age or is it modern? It had no stopper, the one I put on it now is unrelated of course..
Thank you very much!
Matthias

Dear Matthias,

Sadly, I have to agree with Pin.
Better luck next time.
Steven or Pin, or someone, could you post examples of genuine early [18th/19th C.] examples?
Thanks,
Joey

Dear Matthias,

Thank you for sharing your bottle.

Joey and Pin are right about the bottle, its fairly new( but its not made in recently 20 years as I suspect, it could be from 1970s if I am right) .

I also think the bottle has a very unique color combinations, quite unusual.

Please find a couple of bottles with the Mallow flower, altho not the double overlay, but you should be able to how the old bottles carved which is not shown on your bottle.

Happy collecting!

Steven

Dear Steven,

Thank you. Very nice examples, showing the quality difference between the 18th/19th C. examples and the late 20th C. example. I am not sure you are right. Could be 1970s, but equally to me 1990s.
Best,
Joey

Hi all

A mallow flower glass bottle in my collection.

Probably late 18th century - early 19th century.

Height: 46 mm

Enjoy!

Dear Matthias,

Now your goal is to go out and find one for yourself. And it is possible. Train your eye to recognise genuine examples, and when one comes up, you will be able to identify it. It might help to go to antique fairs in Italy. Giovanni seems to find amazing examples there.

Best,
Merry Christmas,
Joey

Hi Matthais,

Thank you for sharing.

Even though it is a modern bottle, I see that your double overlay bottle is well carved.
The size appears to be just right to be cupped and fondled in the palm. Enjoy the bottle and forget about the age of it.

Dear Matthias,

There is a constant difference of opinion between two sides.
On one side, those who consider a small modern bottle imitating a Chinese snuff bottle, but never used to hold snuff, as a valid snuff bottle;

and on the other side, those who say that a snuff bottle, to be a snuff bottle, needs to have been made to hold snuff, and ideally be from the classic snuff taking period in Qing & Republic China, ie., ca.1640-1930.

   Anything can be 'a collectible'.

Dear Giovanni,

We are in agreement, though I also collect modern IPSBs.
But I think of modern IPSBs more as Interior Painted Small Bottles, than as
Interior Painted Snuff Bottles.
Best,

  A buon Natale,
