Hi All,

Since we have had a recent thread on peanut bottles, and another on carved wood panels, I thought I'd combine the two topics and post an interesting carved wood peanut. It is 150 mm (just under 6 inches) long. The realistically carved shell splits open to reveal 3 nut pods inside. Each of the nuts also opens like a miniature box with a smoothly hollowed interior. There are eight parts in all.

Not sure what one would keep in these mini boxes, but it sure is fun to fiddle with, so I guess it is some kind of scholar's desk object. I have another shorter one, which has two pods instead of three.

Enjoy!

Dear Tom,

What a beautiful object. It doesn't need a use.
It is an 'objet de virtu'.
Best,
Joey

Samson,
I certainly hope nobody tries to eat these peanuts.

Ileney,

I lost your recent posts on carved wooden panels. So I am using this thread to connect with you on the subject of panels.

I asked the same carpenter to make a small bedside cabinet for my wife when we found some interesting panels in his workshop. The dimensions of the cabinet is 29" high x 25" wide.

Dear Inn Bok,

That is a beautiful bedside locker.
I agree with Tom - I'd like a pair of them as well.
Best,

Hi Tom

I think these are pillboxes.

Just my 2 cents.

Hi Richard,

Pill boxes? I never thought of that. As they are meticulously carved and seem to have no useful function, I had assumed they were scholar's desk objects. Or, as Joey says, 'objets de virtu'.

Each piece has a unique shape, and needs to be inserted in exactly the right way, otherwise it won't fit - kind of like a 3D puzzle.

Inn Bok, that cabinet is spectacular! What craftsmanship. I had posted the pictures of the panels in the section on boxes and other items under the area where I was previously asking about cinnabar boxes. I can repost some better pictures tomorrow.

Dear Tom,

I agree with Richard that they would have been pillboxes, but that does not negate their also being objects for the scholar's desk.

A true Chinese Literatus would not have had anything crass or common in his possession.

Everything, even objects that represented 'artful artlessness' [ie., a walking stick looking like a plain piece of vine that had dried out and hardened, and was used as a scholar's stick, but with an end looking like a dragon's head - see mine, a gift from John Ang of Taipei - A-17 in "Worlds"], would demonstrate great thought and dedication to quality.

Best,
Joey

Hi Inn Bok,

I hope these attachments show now. I've hung the panels on the wall now!
Love, love love the cabinet and mirror you had made!

Dear Tom and Ileney,

Thanks. The sad thing is that, in Singapore, craftsmen of this standard are disappearing year by year because of aging and lack of disciples who are willing to take on carpentry works.
I suppose in Thailand, Tom has a better chance to still find good craftsmen ?

Ileney, the panels you fixed up on the wall look very nice indeed.
