I seem to recall Tom saying he wanted a Satsuma snuff bottle and I hadn't seen another example so snapped this one up from ebay.

I don't know if it was first intended to be a snuff bottle but it has snuff residue inside.

Just 41mm high and without stopper and spoon.

Regards, Adrian.

Ah Adrian,

Does it have a finely crackled, creamy, glaze?  I can not see any distinct crackling of the glaze from the pics.  On older Satsuma it is easily seen.  On newer pieces from the mid 1920's to the 1970's less so in many cases.

Hi Charl,

The glaze is smooth with no cracks at all. I only have one other piece of Satsuma ware on which the cracking of the glaze is very evident and if it were the same on this bottle, because of it's small size, it would overrun the decoration some what. There isn't a surface shine of a glaze on the bottle which there is on my Satsuma bowl so it may have been left off hence the lack of cracking but I'm guessing as I know nothing of Satsuma wares.

Regards, Adrian.

Dear Adrian,

I inherited from my dear mother 2 very fine quality mid-late 19th C. [Meiji / Mingzhi] Satsuma vessels, a miniature vase and an incense burner, which would both fit inside the 'traditional' size parameters of snuff bottles [50mm - 75 mm in height; 30mm - 50mm in diameter], and they both have a fine crackle.

And the antique Satsuma snuff bottles in the Trammell Crow Jnr. collection of Japanese snuff bottles, had a fine crackle.

Are these modern Satsuma? And if so, where is the crackle?
Best,
Joey

Hi, when the glaze is not crackled, it cannot be Satsuma. Also the decoration doesn't strike me as being Japanese. Maybe this is European (British maybe)? For comparison, a small Satsuma incense box of about the size of a snuff bottle, you can clearly see the crackles...
Regards,
Matthias
