A recent purchase.

An ivory bottle made with a separate base, neck and collar and with four side panels. Height is 8cms.

The incised calligraphy on the two sides is so small you need a loupe to make it out. Post 1950 I imagine.

Regards, Adrian.

Adrian,

I appreciated the artistic workmanship of the figurines and the bird.
They were executed very well, not crude like some I saw on some bottles.
A beauty to admire at.

Dear Adrian,

I love the parrot and the side with the two ladies, but the way the artist screwed up the symmetry of the lines of characters, disturbs me. And the fact that the pendent leaf design doesn't go all around the neck, also.
Best,
Joey

Dear Adrian,

I think I have an ivory nuff bottle by the same artist.
I think it is dated from ding mao, so 1987 ?

Best,
Yannick

Hi Yannick,

Sorry to be replying so late and welcome to the forum.

Yes, they look very similar so could be by the same artist. the calligraphy is so small it's hard to make anything out.

Regards, Adrian.

Hi Yannick,

I really like the second side of your bottle - the two small figures add the finishing touch to the landscape.

And I agree with Adrian's comments.

All best,
Tom

Dear Yannick,

It could also be 1927, 1867, 1807 or 2047 [if the carver had a time machine. Roll Eyes Grin].
Chances are it is 1927, or later but the carver inscribed a fake date.
It could possibly be 1987, but I don't think they were doing this type of bottle in the 1980s.
Best,
Shabbat Shalom,
Joey

Hi all,

Thank you Adrian for your welcoming.
I think too 1927 is a possibility regarding the natural patina of ivory but I'm not totally convinced by the ladies style...
As Tom, my preferred side is the second one on both snuff bottle.
I hope that the third example we'll see in 2021 (Adrian' in 2017, mine in 2019) will give us more information !  Tongue

Best,
Yannick
