Hi all,
Just got this snuff bottle today but not sure the age of it even the seller stated it's 19th century. Love the painting so much. Does any one know the age of it?

Thanks,

Ming

Congratulations Ming !

I had my eye on this as well, but went well over my snipe bid..

I do believe it is indeed 19th...

The theme for the painting is "Hunters returning home", and here is a translation for the scripts on yours.

Yes, congratulation Ming! Also, noticed this one and a few other blue and whites on ebay from the same seller.

Regarding the age of the bottle, I believe one dating clue is to look at the trefoil decoration around the neck of the bottle. With that particular design with the extra dots in between the bottle should be post 1855 - as that was the earliest date that decoration appeared with the extra dots(I could be 5-10 years off here as I don't have that particular book to hand right now). If I had to guess, I'd give your bottle a date of 1860-1910.

Dear Luke,

Close, but no cigar.  Roll Eyes Grin
Only one dot between each trefoil means ca.1820-1850, or Daoguang period.
ASSUMING it is genuine and not a reproduction. This looks 'right' to me, but I'd love Steven's opinion - I trust his judgement over the screen more than my own.
Best,
Shabbat Shalom,
Joey

Dear Ming,

I guess this is the first time I co-response with you on the Forum. and I must miss something  important, since I don't have much time to spend on the Forum like I usually do this year.

Congratulations on the bottle! I think its a very nice 19th bottle, well painted , and beautiful color too.

I agree with everything other says about the bottle. specially Joey, He always have great taste for all kinds of snuff bottle, and have a collection of THE BEST blue and white porcelain snuff bottles.

but I'd love Steven's opinion - I trust his judgement over the screen more than my own.
Best,

Dear Joey,

I will take it as a compliment.Smiley

Best,

Steven

Dear Ming,

I'm thrilled for you that Steven agreed that it is Daoguang.
And YES, Steven; you should take it as a compliment. Wink
And Yes, Luke. More dots mean later.  Grin
The trefoil without any dots is late Qianlong/Jiaqing (ca.1790-1820). One dot between each two trefoils is Daoguang (1820-1850). Anyone with "Dragon" can compare #2 (Qianlong), #5 (Daoguang), #14 (Xianfeng/Tongzhi), etc.
With the proviso that the decorated object is genuine.
Best to all,
Joey

Ming,

As mentioned previously the theme and style of your bottle is one of the more abundant in porcelain blue and white bottles.  This comment is intended in no way to be a  detraction on your wonderful example.  Here are links to similar bottles for comparison.
