Hi,

I purchased this snuff bottle recently but not sure it is Ye Zhongsan's real snuff bottle or not. Can any one help?

Thank you,

Ming

First, let me say welcome aboard !

I am having a little difficulty being absolutely sure it is Ye Zhongsan the Elder, but does seem fine for Ye Family studio..

Either I simply can not match a date, or it is not dated...

Lets see what others think...

Thanks George. I think it's year 1933. I just do not have enough knowledge to appraise it is genuine or not.

Ah, yes... 1933 indeed...

Production was generally poor during 1933 for the Ye Family with a small peak in 1935 ..  I think this may place special interest in your bottle..

Looking forward to hearing what others think..

Sometimes it is extra difficult to view a bottle when the pics are way to large.. It may help if you edit the pics down to a more easily viewable size.. Might get a few more replies...

But yes, would be nice to get another opinion or two..

Hi Ming

In my view, the calligraphy is not up to standard for Ye the elder (too hesitant, not fluid)  It is most likely painted by one of the sons.   Nice bottle, however!   I like it.... congrats!

Hi Pat,

Thank you very much for the information. As long as it is not model reproduction then I am happy with it. I think it is still worth for collection right?

Regards,

Ming

Sounds like it is enamel on glass. If so, then post here http://snuffbottle.smfforfree.com/index.php/board,8.0.html

Dear Ming,

Mine is dated 1920, and the similarities to your bottle are such that I wouldn't rule out it being by Ye the Elder. If Ye Zhongsan died in 1945 at the age of 77 (as suggested in the Apricot Grove Studio book) then he would have been 65 in 1933 and his work may have suffered from bad eyesight and hands not as steady as in his youth - which could account for the slight differences in the quality of the work. I cannot find reference to when he actually stopped painting but 1933 would have been a difficult time (1937-1949 being the worst where production completely stopped).

Also I had this reference in the notes on my bottle, so wanted to share it with you.

Hi Cathy,
I agree with you. When he was at age 65, it was definitely would affect his eyes and hands by that time. Thanks for sharing the reference from the Met museum with me. I may see it in person last when I went there last time but I couldn't remember.Lol
