Hi,
I just got this one lately but no idea it is old or not. Can anyone provide more information on this?

Thank you,

Ming

Congratulations on a beautiful Yangzhou bottle Ming !

When the Qianlong reign mark was used at Yangzhou it was always a four character seal script version.

Thanks George. Too bad there is a minor chip on the top.
Does any one know what is Yangzhou in Chinese?

Regards,

Ming

Hi Ming

Nice bottle, and great detail in the pictures!  I am not an expert on Peking glass.   I will let some others chime in.

Hi Hi

Why would this be referred as a YangZhou bottle? I thought that it's drawn rather than carved.

I am not sure what you mean by "drawn" Pin...

I am referencing info about a group of bottles from Mysteries of the Ancient Moon describing these as being Yangzhou...

Start reading at : "There is one other group of enameled glasswares" below..

I always thought that it was painted using enamel paint over the glass rather than carved.

Hi Pin, I too was confused at first when I saw some imperial enamel on glass bottles being described as Yangzhou. Apparently, apart from the glass overlay Yangzhou bottles that are commonly known, certain enamel on glass bottles are also being categorised as Yangzhou, but that doesn't refer to the Yangzhou school of glass carving...

Best,
Samson

George,

Ancient Moon Pavilion is translated from Gu (Ancient or Old) Yue (Moon) Xuan (Pavilion or Studio), usually written in Pinyin as 'Guyuexuan' (In Wade-Giles, Ku Yueh Hsuan). Dating (If Imperial, ca.1740-1799; otherwise, to 1840).  The Guyuexuan was an Imperial Workshop situated in the Forbidden City somewhere (damned if I know where, exactly  Shocked),
though it may also have referred to a private Pavilion / Studio / Hall belonging to the Qianlong Emperor, and the workshop with the same name simply produced objects solely for that Pavilion.

I would describe this as a Guyuexuan ware, of enamels on milk glass. The reversed part of the 'Qian' character, points to it being made between 1795, when the Qianlong Emperor abdicated (in order not to 'shame' his illustrious ancester the Kangxi Emperor, who'd ruled 60 years, 1662-1722, by ruling longer) and 1799, when he died.

Like Pin, I also understand 'Yangzhou' to refer to glass snuff bottles with a very thin overlay and often a seal carved on the surface of the bottle; dating ca.1780-1880. These were made in Yangzhou, and were especially prized by the salt merchants there.

Having written that, there could have been production of enamel wares in Yangzhou, but I am not aware of it. I understood that Beijing and Guangzhou were the two primary if not only, locations where enamelled wares were produced.
Best,
Joey
