A photography gotcha from the perils of buying online!

I bought this jade purse thinking that it was a "white" jade bottle. The first three photos are from the seller.
When it came it turned out to be celadon in color. See the last picture which I took.

However, looking at the few examples I can find of jade purses, it seems that perhaps the celadon nephrite is actually more authentic than a white bottle would be.

Would appreciate your opinions on the color and the bottle.

Hi Cathy,

Did the seller specifically describe it as "white" jade? As you have no doubt observed from top end auctions the truly WHITE and unblemished snuff bottles sell for 3-4 times the price of their 'off white' counterparts.

Irrespective of that, I agree that the pale celadon colour looks 'more authentic' on your purse bottle. The shape and carving both appear 'right' to my eye. A fine looking example. Congratulations!

Thank you Tom!
No the seller did not describe it as white. I was foolishly relying on the photos.

I am still happy with it. A jade purse - of any quality - appears to be hard to find.

Cathy,

Jade purses are not common, and one like this in pure unblemished white nephrite would probably fetch many times the price, so you should indeed be happy with what you have.

Thank you Tom!

I don't know if you believe in fate - but the bottle was meant to be. I actually lost on the bidding on it twice - and when the second buyer failed to pay, the seller offered it to me as second chance, and so now it has found a permanent home. Wink

Cathy, I certainly do! That's a wonderful story.

And as you know, it's unlucky to leave a purse empty. So if you have any snuff powder, put a little inside. Alternatively (and this may be better) drop a few links of a gold chain into it - or some similar item of gold small enough to pass through the mouth.   Wink

Thanks Tom! I will do that! I have to admit that I have Fu, Lu, and Shou sitting right here on my desk and Fu wears some of my jewelry so I am definitely game to "fill" my purse! hahaha

Nice jade purse/bottle Cathy! Good find! People in the old days used to hang purse next to their waist. Did you notice me those holes around the neck of your purse form bottle? They're for strings to be inserted through them...

Best,
Samson

Hi Cathy,

I hadn't seen any jade purses that appealed to me before but yours is very nice and glad to see fate taking a part in getting it to you.

Regards, Adrian.

Thanks Rheuben, I have not found the rhyme or reason to my collecting yet - although I am trying to focus on middle period inside painted bottles and jades.

Thanks also to Luke, Adrian and Samson! Samson the opening to the bottle is a small round hole and there are two drilled holes for strings located on either side of the opening. There's also a tiny hole in the green jade top.

Richard I will see if I can locate gold dust - excellent idea!

Cathy,

The tiny hole in the stopper may have been for inserting an extra loop of thread, connected to the string that Samson mentioned. It would prevent the stopper from falling if it worked loose.

When you get a chance, can you post a photo of the mouth opening without the stopper? Does the hollowing extend into the shoulders?

Thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom,

Yes, the hollowing extends well up the shoulders - I actually had to bend a piece of solder wire to see how far it goes and it's impressive - have no idea how they could hollow like that.
Here's a pic of the opening

Thanks Cathy,

Unless a workshop has begun producing high quality copies (in which case I'd expect to see more of them on the market), I would date your bottle 1780-1850. A really great addition to your collection!

Get that gold dust into it fast...!
