Cathy,

The tiny hole in the stopper may have been for inserting an extra loop of thread, connected to the string that Samson mentioned. It would prevent the stopper from falling if it worked loose.

When you get a chance, can you post a photo of the mouth opening without the stopper? Does the hollowing extend into the shoulders?
