Thank you all.

A brief intro on myself: Am ethnic Chinese from Malaysia, living with my wife & 2 kids in Singapore. In my early 40s. Do a fair bit of travel to Shanghai & Beijing for work, and discovered snuff bottles there in the last 2 years. Have bought several bottles purely out of fascination with their delicate inside paintings (again, from my untrained eyes) without really knowing what i bought and definitely have overpaid  Embarrassed. Really only began to appreciate the intricacy and varieties of snuff bottles more recently.

While i speak conversational Mandarin, cantonese and hokkien, I was not educated in Chinese and cannot read or write Chinese. Regretably, I cannot appreciate the chinese characters that accompany the paintings. Nonetheless, i look forward to learning more about this wonderful artistic and cultural heritage.

thank you, KK

Hi KK,

I had a feeling that the "KL" in your forum name actually stand for Kuala Lumpur.. Wink

Well, I am also a Malaysian-born Chinese, but have since my birth moved to Hong Kong, except for my high school years which I spent back in KL.

We have similar backgrounds! Cheesy

Hi  KK

Greetings  from a Honkie  who collects   VMIPBs

You wrote : "Do a fair bit of travel to Shanghai & Beijing for work, and discovered snuff bottles there in the last 2 years"

Would  you  care to  share  please  where  you have been  buying  bottles  in SH and  BJ of  late ?

For many years  I was working   in  both BJ and  SH  at least once  per month and  I bought a  lot  of VMIPBs  from  specialist  dealers  there

Cheers

Peter.

PS: Please  check out  my  ICSBS  article  on VMIPBs  which  is  on the Forum  side-bar. You can  download  it for  free.

Thank you everyone for your warm welcome. much appreciate.

Richard - certainly look forward to connecting with forum members in SG. Again, pls note that i am just a newbie who can't even make out the characters on the bottle  Grin

Peter - am almost embarrassed to say where i got them as the shops may well be just tourist traps. There is one shop in Pearl City Plaza along Nanjing lu in SH and another at Arts & Craft Mansion along Wangfujing lu in BJ. Would welcome your recommendations - again bearing in mind that i am still new to this.

cheers all.

Hi  KK

I  don't know   the Pearl River  Plaza.  I used to  buy   most of my  bottles  from a  little  dealer   in the  tourist  shop  complex  around the  Yu  Garden - there  are a lot of   shops there  selling   IPBs  for  tourists, but  I  finally  one that  had  some  good  class  bottles,  and - far  important - had a  secret  "bottom  drawer" of the  REAL  STUFF for  which  I was  paying  between  RMB  2,000  -  8,000  per  bottle  about  5- 6 years  ago.

REAL STUFF  =  genuine  bottles  by serious  artists

I once  asked the  owner,  Ms  Wong,  why  she  never  displayed the  REAL  STUFF   and  she   laughed  "because  if I  did show  those  bottles, on  which  I  only  make   about   25%  margin,  the  tourists  would  never  buy the  junk  I sell them   at  250%  margin "  ( !)

Sadly  Ms  Wong  has  gone  out of  business.  But there  is an  artist-turned-dealer who  has (or  had)  two  shops  in SH, one  in Pudong and  one  in  Hong Qiao .   I can  give you  his name  and  address  later. His shops  are  exclusively    the  REAL  STUFF , but  prices  range  from  RMB 10- 30 K  (or even  higher)  , which  is market price for  that class of bottles

However  I do  know the Arts and  Crafts  Mansion  in Wanfujing  - it's near the  junction  with Chang An Jie - yes ? ,   and the  bottle section  is  on the   2nd  floor (or it  was    last  time I went  there  a few  years  ago).

One  of our  other  Forum members  based  in HK  bought a  lot of  very good  bottles  there  at  reasonable prices  in  the  1990s.   But  when I went  there  a  few  years  ago  what they  had on  sale  was  very  low-grade  stuff  at  ridiculous  prices  ( RMB 80-100K   asking prices !!! )

But I can introduce  you  a  very good  dealer  in BJ :  Jill  Guojie,  who is also known to  several collectors  in S'Pore (she  used  to sell  VMIPBs  exclusively, but  now  has branched  out  to  other  kinds of  bottles)

First  stop  for you  should  be to contact the  "Nanyang"  collector's   group in S'Pore.  Richard  or  one of the other  S'Pore  Forum members  can introduce  you to them

Cheers

Peter
