Dear Adrian,

Every bit of info helps in some way. What confused me for a bit was the fact that you did not go from smallest [5 mm] to largest [8 mm]. But then I noticed that in each group, you went from largest number of examples to smallest.
Best,
Joey

I'm adding the following because I have the information to hand.

I hadn't previously realised that glass bottles had the openings in the neck drilled to tidy up what would have been a less uniform opening left by the blowing process, whether it be free blowing or blowing into a mould. So I can now add all the glass bottles from the Bloch and Markovic collections to my previous figures.

From 550 glass bottles the sizes that occur the most are;

6mm     58 bottles
7mm     53 bottles
6.5mm   42 bottles
8mm      31 bottles
These four sizes account for 33.4% of the total number.

For 469 Jade, quartz, stone etc.

6mm      38 bottles
5mm      28 bottles
7mm      27 bottles
5.5mm    21 bottles
These four sizes account for 24.3% of the total number

Combine all these and there are 1019 bottles.

6mm       96 bottles
7mm       80 bottles
6.5mm    54 bottles
5mm       50 bottles
These sizes account for 27.5% of all the bottles.

As before I don't really know what use this is but it is surprising that the 4 most common sizes correspond to metric sizes and point to some consistency in the manufacture of drill bit sizes although the latter is to be expected.

Regards, Adrian.

Hi Adrian,

Yes, that confused me too. A graph may help.
Nonetheless, a very informative exercise - looking at an aspect I had not given much thought to before.

Dear Joey and Tom,

Ask and you will be rewarded  Grin

I've now added all the IP bottles to the list and so this represents the mouth openings of 1259 bottles.

The glass bottles show more consistency of sizes than the others in that the first 4 most common sizes in glass account for 32.4% of their total whilst they account for only 27.4% of the total for non glass bottles. There is also a much wider range of sizes of openings for non glass bottles.

Whilst 6mm is the most common opening for both glass and non glass bottles, the second most common opening for non glass bottles is 5mm which is only the sixth most common size for glass bottles.

The Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles tends to group similar bottles together and I was hoping to see some consistency but there really isn't much. There were 2 pebble bottles with 4mm openings but then the next ones varied. 2 Master of the Rocks bottles had the same openings but then they started to vary. There wasn't anything that I could find that would help in establishing any genuine old bottles or schools of carving etc.

Regards, Adrian.

Adrian,

What a statistician you are making the bar chart !

I will be interested to see what kind of distribution charts come forth if you could kindly redo the chart into 3 charts,
one each for IP, glass and non-glass ! Hope this is not too much to ask of you ?

Hi Inn Bok,

3 charts was pushing it a bit so I hope 2 will do. In fact the IP bottles are a mixture of glass and crystal with about 60% of them being glass and in terms of opening sizes they reflect the mixture of materials as they sit between the results for glass and non glass so I didn't feel there was much to gain from graphing them separately, hope that's ok.

Regards, Adrian.

Thanks Adrian,

The graphs really help. Everything is much clearer now. When I see a page of only numbers my eyes glaze over.

Dear Adrian,

You have done an excellent job ! The two graphs are absolurtely enough to show the distribution.
Both categories appear to share the same curve when I imagine superimposing a curve line over the columns.
I will look at the column charts again. Thanks for your effort indeed.

Adrian,

I was toying with your research on mouth opening sizes over the weekend. Using Excel I was able to come up with several ways of displayng the information in graph and pie chart form. I may have miscounted, since my total sampling is for 1,262 bottles, while you list only 1,259. But you get the idea...

Hi Tom,

Thank you for taking the time to do that, it's far neater than my hand written attempt.

I came up with different totals every time I counted up  Smiley
