Today was my day browsing for a bottle in an effort to fix my addiction.. Not something I would normally have purchased, but lost control of my fingers and they hit the buy it now  Cheesy

I don't think these were used for snuff... Some describe them as having been used to store oils or ghee..

From India.. Mid 19th century.. 3 1/2", oil paint on copper bottle..

Fun container though...

I love Kangra paintings - and have two very large old paintings on silk. I'm sure you already know that this is a depiction of the love story of Radha and Krishna.

How fun to find this snuff bottle!

I too was depressed after missing out on everything I wanted at Doyle's today. Sad
Maybe I also need a little Kangra Love.

Khrisna is more often than not depicted with Bluish tinted or even just full on blue skin.

I think these may also be called Mughal paintings:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mughal_painting

As opposed to Kangra paintings:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kangra_painting

The former is more about daily life, whereas the latter is more religious or erotic.

I think your correct Pat, and thank you...

There was another description that might also apply, called Rajasthani style.

Certainly a novel theme for a snuff bottle...!  Possibly made for the Indian market?

Having a "Todays Unusual Bottle Fix" thread may mean I don't have to wait for Fridays to post my unusual collection of bottles.

Always interesting to see bottles from different countries and the variation in decoration.

Regards, Adrian.

Dear George,

I must admit that this bottle might have tempted me as well.

But since ghee is clarified butter, I doubted it would have held that. Valuable fragrant oils, or Kohl, or snuff (surprise, surprise!), are my suggestions for its original use.
Best,
Shabbat Shalom,
Joey
