What is so special there, dear George, is the hunger for money of the seller. Nice bottle, but hey, what a price. Acquamarine stopper?Huh??

I can appreciate the enameling very much.. But the price suggests that perhaps the bidders believed it 18th enamel on glass ?

I just wondered if there was something I was missing..

Maybe he thought he was getting that magical bottle of 30 magpies we once discussed here....one appears each day of the month.   Wink

But since the seller thinks they are sparrows.......I'm stumped.

Dear George, Giovanni & Tom,

I call this form firecracker barrel bottle because it's shape resembles a firecracker barrel (please teach me the right term). I like the fine famille rose enamel work on it and the subject of magpies amidst flowering plum branches. In any case, I don't know what to expect for the price of such thing.

The subject is almost identical to a Daoguang famille rose enamelled porcelain bottle featured in the upcoming Christie's Barron sale.

Hi George,

I have seen some good Japanese items sold by that seller, netsuke etc, of which he had a few on sale at the same time as that bottle and they were on their way to fetching good prices.

I was somewhat surprised at the price that bottle went for but porcelain is something I know little about.

Regards, Adrian.

Dear George, all,
thanks to Pin's comment I now understand the real meaning of your question. In fact I thoguth that it was the price requested by the seller, I didn't realize that it was the price fetched after many biddings! Incredible, I always wonder what is behind some good results on ebay, to me it never happened, also if the item is a good one.
Kind regards
Giovanni

Dear George,

It is a totally modern, but very nice, copy of a late 18th/early 19th C. enamelled porcelain.
Someone got taken...
Thank G-D not you, me or anyone who wrote in on the Forum.
Best,
Joey

Thanks for helping me understand this one everyone..

Another that I thought I might have a chance winning was this porcelain pebble shaped bottle, but was stunned at the hammer price.. I thought it might end up around a couple hundred dollars, but wow !

I liked the look of that one as well George, but saw it go for around $2000 and the buyer didn't pay and it was relisted, so thought it would go for a big amount again 2nd time round. I didn't look into it but thought this one might have some age?

I see the 30 sparrows bottle is relisted.

Buyer didn't pay, or buyer unhappy ?

Dear Luke and George,

That 'Pebble' shaped Porcelain is a genuine Daoguang Imperial Porcelain works bottle from Jingdezhen,
and well worth  US$2000 plus.  There should be 2 crickets, one to a side; and the rebus of two crickets is "Guo Guor", which I was told means, "Loyalty to the Daoguang Emperor". They were given out as gifts from the Court to loyal supporters, to remind them to stay loyal.  Grin Roll Eyes
I had one or 2 of these, though my nicest cricket decorated Daoguang porcelain (I had 5 at one time) had one cricket standing on a cricket cage, and with a Daoguang nianzhi mark in red enamel on the raised footrim. The shape was the same as #52 in "Dragon".
Best,
Joey

Yes, as Luke said apparently the buyer did not pay.. But why the seller did not offer a second chance to the runner up is a bit odd... It was not that much less than the non payers bid..

Shill bidding probably.... I hate it when bidders' IDs are hidden.   It was bid up higher than any legitimate bidder was willing to go, hence relisted.  Happens all too often.

Yes thanks Joey. The bottle actually had what looks like a flea? on the other side. I wish i'd gone for this one now 2nd time around as it went for £686. Although spending any reasonable amounts of money on ebay snuff bottles seems risky to me, but if you are careful I guess a bargain can be had Smiley ... lovely bottle though and this is porcelain imitating a jade pebble I guess...
