Beautiful things deserve appreciation

« on: February 07, 2017, 08:10:02 am »

Dear all,

It's been a while since I last shared a bottle and a week or so since my last post (been busy during CNY). The bottle I'm sharing this time is a smoky quartz bottle that I acquired back in December as a Christmas gift for myself... Smiley Some of you may remember another etched smoky quartz bottle I posted a while ago to get some advices. I didn't get that one eventually as I learned that the etching work done on it actually jeopardized its aesthetic and monetary value. Since then, I've learned to appreciate the beauty of plain bottles and I managed to get this one some time later. It's a simple, tiny bottle with an interesting angular collar. Never seen anything like that before.

Hope you'll enjoy.

Best,
Samson

Nice bottle Samson... for some reason, my first impression is a glass imitating smoky Quartz

Dear Samson,

Congratulations on a beautiful bottle. I used to have a few like that. Its simple elegance is wonderful.

I must admit that I'd remove the intermediate collar if it was mine. The Jadeite stopper and the metal collar would suit the simple elegance of the bottle better in my opinion.

Best,
Joey

Very understated bottle Samson!  Congrats!  The collar would bother me though.... it is almost as if it was glued on to the cab in reverse either by accident or on purpose.

UPDATED: never mind my comment on the collar.  Just noticed how it is beveled... never seen anything like it!

I have one like this (slightly over 2") I showed to Joey who confirmed it early 1800s but quite a bit lighter grey in color. The lip has a slight damage and I need to get it polished out at some point. How tall is yours?  Can we see the mouth?

Samson,

Thanks for sharing this one.  Lovely bottle.  I too like these plain smoky quartz bottles and have to hold myself back on trying to buying every one of these that I came across.  I do presently have two, one of which looks to be very similar to your bottle; i.e., a very dark smoky quartz bottle.  See links below:

Wonderful bottle Samson. When it comes to snuff bottles, I'm an addict of elegant simplicity! Hence, the collar is not so appealing.  Wink

Can you tell us the size?

Hi  Samson

Lovely  bottle. Next time  we  meet  please   bring it  with  you

I need  to  FEEL that  dark  quartz

You really have  good  taste .

Associating with  you  may seriously  damage  my   collecting  habits  ... and  my  wallet
(Remember the  lovely  red  bottle  you "helped" me  buy ? )

Cheers

Dear all,

Thank you very much! I'm glad that you all like it!

Dear Joey,

I see what you all mean with the collar, kinda like an odd one out in the whole combination, but it does look interesting although it may not be aesthetically appealing. I hesitate to modify it at the moment as I fear I may cause damage to it. So I'll just leave it like that until I manage to find something that matches better... Roll Eyes

Dear Tom and Pat,

I'm adding pics showing its mouth, and its height next to a ruler. It's a tiny bottle that can be securely held in the center of the palm. Wink

Dear Charll,

Your bottles are gorgeous too! This one http://snuffbottle.smfforfree.com/index.php/topic,2475.msg32517.html#msg32517
is just like an identical twin of mine! Shocked
That smoky crystal cluster should be an exhibit in a rock and mineral museum! Smiley

Dear Peter,

Sure, let me show it to you when we meet. There're indeed lots of attractive pieces among material bottles as well. After all, I'm after objects of all kinds and forms that give aesthetic pleasure... no intention to "damage" your collecting habits though... Roll Eyes

That red overlay bottle you bought was really a good buy, beautiful and unique!

Best to all,
Samson

Thanks Samson,

So it appears to be around 5.4 cm tall - not too small.
Nicely finished foot rim and mouth / lip. Thanks for the extra pictures.

All, thought I would add another interesting bottle to this thread.

Smoky Quartz Crystal Snuff Bottle:
Body is a relatively inclusion free, clear, smoky quartz crystal carved to a compressed tapered cylindrical form set with twin beast head handles and elongated loop drops, uniformly well hollowed, with flare throat.  Top of bottle is flat with a small 6 mm wide mouth.  Well-polished interior and exterior.  Bottle sets on a raised, short, oval foot rim.  Green jade stopper set in 8 mm broad silver band collar and a long keratin spoon.  Height is 7.2 cm and 51.6 g without stopper.

Period: ca. 19 century.

Condition: Near pristine.

Provenance:  Aalders, Asian Art Auction Including the Estate of Dr. TF Yeung, Aug 14, 2021, Lot 0163
                      No further information provided.

Enjoy, Charll

You are really on a role Charll !  Another beauty..  I can not decide about the stopper though, but always like it when the spoon nearly reaches the bottom of the bottle.

Congrats and thank you for sharing Smiley

Charll,

An impeccably proportioned bottle, from head to toe - congratulations!

I would place this in the earlier rather than later part of the 19th century - say 1820 to 1860.
Interested to know what others think.

All, thank for the comments.  I've been scouring web images and auction catalogs for the last month and have not so far found a similar bottle.

Yes George, the stopper is a little over whelming, but it is an old vintage stopper that could be the original.  As such I have no desire to change it out a present.

Tom, thanks for the comment on the dating.  That was my thinking as well, but I do not have enough experience with hardstones yet to know.  Interesting though, I showed the bottle to Dessa Goddard, Raymond Lum, and Marsha Vargas-Handley jointly on August 29th (just after I received the bottle) during an inspection of Northern California collector’s bottles to display in ICSBS Convention in San Francisco next year (2022).  Their quick evaluation and initial thought was that it dated to the Republican Period.  Though considering all the bottles they were evaluating that day, I had them look at this bottle after that event and it was only a glancing inspection.

Dear Charll,

I like it better now that you have cleaned it up. Either you have a very good camera or I am seeing a nice gradual gradient tone which adds to the rarity of this bottle.
Well hollowed, flawless, deep footrim.

For your reference, a Snuff Bottle of similar shape which I have handled before the auction. My note was, "Aventurine uneven, 20th Century".

Charll,

Have you tried looking at jade and glass bottles for an example of similar shape?

Also, if you open the link YT gave us for than aventurine glass bottle, under the commentary it says that the meiping form appears to have been less popular during the 19th century than it was during the Qianlong period.
I'm not suggesting your bottle is 18th century, only that there are going to be fewer examples of this style if it wasn't popular.
