Hi Everyone,

This is an agate bottle I bought in the 80's. It is about 2 1/4 inches tall and 2 1/4 inches wide. On the front of the bottle there is a bird in a tree and the other side has a bird as well. Maybe magpie's or crows? The bottle is very well hollowed.

I hope the size of the pictures works. In my last post, the pictures were too small. I'm trying to get it right.

Best,

Toni-Lee

Dear Toni-Lee,

First of all, perfect size to examine. Please go back and correct the others. There is a 'modify' button in each of your own posts. Only you can correct mistakes, etc. (Possibly George can, as well).

Now, the important info: This is a really nice example of a mid-19th C. (ca.1830-1880) Shadow Agate.  The Taotie (carved mock ring handles to the narrow sides) are very nicely carved.

Best,
Joey

Hi Joey,

It's a typo. Hahaha.  Must have been subconsciously drawing on my Irish roots on one side of the family! Thanks for your thoughts.

Dear Toni-Lee,

Where are they from in Ireland? I have a summer home in County Wexford (SE most county in the Irish Republic).
Best,
Joey

Joey,

My father's Dad was from County Cork. I don't know much outside of the fact that it is in Southern Ireland. I've never been to Ireland with the exception to stop-over at the airport while traveling. I understand it is quite beautiful.

Hi Tony-Lee,

Nice bottle, I have a growing affection for these shadow agate bottles and hope to add a proper old one to my modern examples.

Regards, Adrian.

Hi Toni,

Your shadow agate bottle is nicely carved for its size.

The carving of the bird head in the first picture appears much better executed than the one on the second picture. Your bottle appears to be rather thin ?

Hi Inn,

Yes, the bottle is very well hollowed and I do like the side with the magpie and tree carving better than the other side. I think it very simplistic in its presentation, adding to its beauty.

Best,

Dear Toni-Lee,

Just a correction, my name is Inn Bok ( they are the Fujian pronunciation of 胤穆 in Hanyu Pinyin ) and my
family name is Ooi ( its equivalent in Hanyu Pinyin in 黄 ). My grandfather and father both came from the Fujian province in China.

Dear Inn Bok,

Please accept my apology for the error regarding your name. I mistakenly thought it was your first and last name. Thank you for the correction.

Again, thank you for your kind words.

Best,

Guys,

Re.one side of a shadow agate being noticeably better than the other; I used to have 20 or so, and in almost every case, one side of a bottle was arguably better than the other. I started to buy only those with a well-carved front and a plain reverse, which also came up a lot.

Interestingly enough, Nephrite Jades never seem to have an 'A' side and a 'B' side. If they are well carved, it is all over; similarly, if the carving is mediocre, it is so on both sides.

Best,
Joey
