Just curious, and also curious who the artist is for this one..

Dear George,

Is it old? It looks suspicious to me. But I'm not good at judging 'on the line' (a meant to be humorous refer to the movie "The Internship").
Best,
Joey

Dear George,

But who are the bidders, and how good is their knowledge?

Can't say... But the interesting part is that there were so many bidders bidding against each other.

I wonder who is the artist.... I feel that it's quite a nice bottle but not at that price...

George I'm so glad you asked about that bottle. I think they thought it was Ding Erzhong. The signature is faded but you can faintly make out the Erzhong. I stayed away because I haven't studied him enough, plus I thought the seal wasn't right.

Dear George,

     So what?
Guess how many people are in China, George? Guess how many of them are trying to be 'experts' and 'dealers' in Chinese Art? Now, guess how many of them understand 'f**k all about snuff bottles?
Sorry, me bad. Shocked Roll Eyes Grin

Numbers of ignorant morons don't impress me.  Roll Eyes Wink
If you said that Clare Chu, and Laurence Souksi and Hugh Moss, and Marsha Vargas Handley, among the dealers; and a number of expert collectors who I won't name for privacy reasons, were bidding, I'd wonder why I wasn't bidding.

It is the group of 30-50 Mainland Chinese 'dealers' bidding up the 50+ Amber snuff bottles in Paris at the Servier auction in Dec.2015, all over again.

And even if it is signed Erzhong, doesn't make it Erzhong, Cathy. A few years ago, a relative of mine wore white at her wedding; didn't make her a virgin... Roll Eyes Shocked Grin

    Best to all,
Joey

Hi George,

Similarities in the seal and signature between this one of mine and the one you are querying.

I had the signature of mine as by Ting Erh chung and an i-mao date 1915 ? This was his real name and his art name Ting Yui Keng.

I have the last character of yours as "chung" and enough left of the above character to suggest the "Erh" which is formed of just 2 horizontal lines.

I can't find examples of his work for any comparisons for his style of painting etc which is unhelpful.

Regards, Adrian.

Joey, I remember a time, many years ago, when I could meet women my age who were virgins. These days if I meet one who was my age and a virgin I would run a mile.

Adrian better make that a rain coat.

Joey - I wore white at all 4 of my weddings.  Grin

I didn't say it was Erzhong, I just said it was signed Erzhong.

As an alley cat who has to forage through the trash on ebay, I am getting street wise.  Grin

Dear Adrian,

If that is a genuine Ding Erzhong, then I'm Hillary Rodham Clinton!   Roll Eyes Grin
And I have 7 genuine Ding Erzhongs.

Dear Cathy,

I'm impressed! Is that like the widow whose hair went platinum blonde from grief?!  Roll Eyes Shocked Wink
Best to all,

Dear Joey, regarding husbands - it should be obvious by now that I like collecting things. Kiss
Blonde yes, I've even gone fiery red, but platinum? Please! That's far too gauche for a southern belle!

Dear Hillary,

The chef at the Imperial Palace Wok Shop assured me it was. Apparently his grandfather bought it from Ding Erzhong in 1905 but didn't realise he hadn't signed it until 10 years later so went back and insisted he signed it which clearly explains why it was dated 10 years after Erzhong stopped painting. When the grandfather commissioned the bottle he told Erzhong he didn't want any of his usual crap and asked him to paint in a different style with rabbits and squirrels as he liked them. He nearly commissioned the bottle from Ting Erh-Chung but Ding Erzhong said he would do it cheaper. Provenance as they say is everything.

Regards, Adrian.

Dear Adrian,

Could I get the use of the time machine that the chef's grandfather used to go forward in time to the 1980s to buy a lead crystal blank, and pictures of cutesy tourist pics of rabbits and squirrels, to do such a great copy of 1980s tourist tat in 1905, and then went back to 1905?
But why didn't he already copy KFC and Macdonalds in 1905?
We could have been eating Kung Fu Chicken (KFC)  and Great Wall Burgers, and the Chinese could be making the mega billions from fast food!   Roll Eyes

But as Cathy so rightly wrote, let's cut the BS and return to SSBS.
Best,

Joey (AKA Hillary)

Hi George,

I am usually wary of bottles that look like they have some kind of patina applied to the entire interior.
