I'm not sure if this belongs here or under other objects, but I think it is fun! I recently bought this cute decorative Laque Burgauté box to go along with an inexpensive (and I assume from the sticker recent) Laque Burgauté snuff bottle that I bought a while ago. Pictures of both below.

Dear Ileney,

What a pair you have brought about ! Interesting works of art.

This type of work is really time consuming, something I appreciate too.

I kept two to three snuff bottles of this type to appreciate the workmanship and the process of making them.

Hi Ileney,

Wonderful!  A real laborious undertaking. I too really appreciate Lac Burgaute. Very nice find.

Regards,

Toni-Lee

P.S. Sorry I didn't reply earlier. We are in the middle of our second Nor'easter in a week! This one has graced us with  18 inches of snow so far with high winds and no end in sight. At least I have power this time! Ahhhhh,  New England!

Toni-Lee,

It's been a brutal winter for y'all!  Even by New England standards.

Cheers to Spring!

Thank you for all the very kind comments.

I had 21" of snow at the condo in MA and I am now in Maine where there were a mere 14", but it's been in the low twenties with a storng wind all day!

I bought a few new stone bottles and these are my two favorites. I bought a little wood stand to display some snuffs and these two are amongst those going on it. One is "fun" because it is so small, the other because it is a pendant.

One is a miniature sodalite bottle with a very high gloss finish and oddly, a lapis lazuli (not sodalite) stopper with a hand shaped spoon.  It measures just a hair over 1.5" high without the stopper and approximately 1.75" tall with the stopper. It's got a very nice taper from top to bottom and a lovely shape IMO. It's so tiny I love it!

The elephant with rings is of a consistently mottled and visually pleasing lapis lazuli, but not as dark as the highest quality lapis. (The stopper is a higher quality darker lapis, but one of the rings is darker as well, so I think it is OK that the color isn't quite the same; it is a gently squared shape, made to match the bottle design.) It's a well-carved snuff IMO, with an easily removable 14K finding attached so it can be worn as a pendant. The top swivels so you can still remove the stopper, and actually, the entire finding looks like it can be removed easily because of the way the gold twisted rings slip into a closure, but I don't think I'll try lest I loosen it and find it is not as secure for wearing afterwards.

Dear Ilene,

    I like them both too.
I had a shock at first! In 1974, I bought a double gourd bottle in Lapis with a matching stopper, and later [Nov. 1980] had it mounted in a hinged 18K gold holder; the hinge was at the point where the stopper met the neck. It was on an 18K gold chain.
I had it made as a gift for my mom of blessed memory.
Best,
Joey

Joey, thank you for the nice comments. Your mom must have loved that gift!  I wish I could have seen your mother’s pendant so I could compare the way the settings were designed. With inexpensive, mass produced glass snuffs, I feel no remorse drilling through them to hang them, but when there is some nice carving work or a more valuable material used, of course I would only consider a protective setting that won’t scratch or damage the bottle. Most of my stone bottles are new and very heavy, so I just display them and would not wear them anyway, but I do have two pretty bottles I might consider converting if I can figure out something secure that is also easily removable. Dear Ilene,

After my mom's death, in Sept.2004 [2 days before Kol Nidrei, so we barely got 2 days of Shiv'a], I gave it as a remembrance of my mom z"l to a very close friend of hers who'd always admired it. I felt my mom would have wanted her to have it.

It was a double gourd shaped flattened flask, about 1 3/4 inches [45 mm] tall, 1 inch [25 mm] wide at widest point, and 1/2 inch [12.5 mm] thick, without the matching stopper.

Our Armenian jeweler, Kevork Pannikian of blessed memory, worked with me on the design.

He fashioned a strip of 22K gold [it is softer and easier to work] 1/10 inch [2.5 mm] wide to follow the contours of the bottle exactly. Another piece was made to wrap around the neck of the bottle and soldered to the double gourd shaped strip. Little pieces of 18K gold wire, with a tiny bit on the end cold forged flat, were also soldered to the strip, so that they could be bent at a 90 degree angle, to hold the bottle securely within the double gourd shaped strip.

The neck piece had a little 14K gold pin soldered on each side and the 22K strip shaped in a semi-circular shape to hold down the stopper had a hole drilled on each side to fit over the pins.

It was really quite a simple design, and worked well.
Best,
Shabbat Shalom,
Joey

Dear Ileney,

Lapis lazuli with the right matrix is always a beauty to behold. I like lapis as well but so far I have not yet had a bottle of this material. Glad you have acquired it.

It's not Friday but there has been nothing posted here for two months so, as I haven't posted a bottle for, well a whole day now, I thought I would bring this thread back to life.

This appealed in shape and subject matter. Height, or should it be length, is 88mm and I think it dates to ting-yu which would be 1957. I can't recognise a signature from any of my reference material so any help in translating the calligraphy would be appreciated.

Regards, Adrian.

Dear Adrian,

    I LOVE your IPSB!
I love the naturalistic pea-pod/bean-pod shape, with the subject matter matching the shape.
Wonderful.
Best,
