I just acquired this Aquamarine Bottle at the ICSBSC and wanted to share it with you.  It is approximately 72 mm and is well carved. It has masks with rings on either side.  It was sold in 1999 by the North Carolina Museum of Arts to Benefit their Acquisition Fund.  I wonder if anyone is familiar with that sale and might know who gave the snuff bottles to the museum.  I remember in the past that someone on the Forum had talked about getting bottles that came from the NC Museum of Arts, maybe Tom? Huh

It was sold at Sotheby's New York on March 22, 1999.  I also wonder if anyone has an idea of the age of the bottle.  It is simple and elegant in my opinion.  I also think the color is beautiful.  Let me know what you think.  I am including the photo the seller made of the bottle.  I appreciate your opinion.  Jo

Dear Jo,

Gorgeous Aquamarine bottle! I would date it ca. 1780-1840.
Re.the NC Museum provenance, I had heard that Florence Ueltsen of Fu MingFaire Antiques had donated some bottles to a museum  in NC, but don't know if this is the one.
Best,
Shabbat Shalom,
Joey

Hi Jo,

Nice bottle.....congratulations!

I checked the catalog, and it only says 'Property of the NC Museum of Art Sold to Benefit the Acquisition Fund'. No mention of original provenance or acquisition number.

Back in 1999 it was sold along with two other bottles. Have you checked the height yourself? Because there are other bottles on the same page, and alongside them this one looks to be no more than 5.3 mm tall.

The catalog illustration shows a shallow carved decoration on one main side. Your posted photo shows the plain side, which appeals more to me.

Dear Jo,
very nice bottle! Is it really acquamarine? I am asking so because acquamarine is a quite expensive gem! May be it depends of the grade of purity, and density of the color. In any case, really nice, congratulations.

Yes indeed aquamarine, and yes it depends on grade as well.  Jo's bottle looks to be of a high grade to me..

Really beautiful !

OK Jo,  Cheesy

Would have loved to have seen this bottle in person while at the convention.  So now I guess I'll just have to wait for when Donna and I get out to southeast coast region of the US again.

A real beauty!!!!!!  Charll

Thanks Everyone.   I have been looking for an Aquamarine Bottle for two years and was thrilled to find this one.   I stand corrected about the height, I just measured it and it appears to be about 2.25 inches tall or around 57 mm.  Thanks for pointing that out Tom as I had not measured it myself.

Charll- We would be delighted to have you and Donna for a visit.  Just let us know when you might be in our area.  I would love for you to see our small collection and get your opinion on some of the bottles.

Giovanni- I do believe it to be a high quality stone that would probably never be used for a snuff bottle these days.  It wasn't cheap but I stretched to buy it as I wanted a good example for our collection.

Dear Inn Bok,

In my experience, the best examples give long lasting pleasure, AND tend to increase greater in monetary value as well.
Best,
Joey
