Dear All,

I havenīt posted anything for a while as I hadnīt had anything of much interest to post lately. I will be quite happy to hear your opinion on this bottle.

I think it is whalebone but I am not sure. It measures 6 cm without the stopper.

Best Regards and Shabat Shalom,

Marcos

Hi Marcos,

How large is the bottle? Whalebone tends to be large, very fibrous and dense pieces. If whalebone, it would also probably be only one solid carved piece. I also don't believe the Japanese made snuff bottles except for some rare instances where they decorated Chinese blanks to sell back to China. I also don't believe the Chinese would have had much access to whale bone unless it was purchased from whalers in the north Pacific.

Best,

Brian

Dear Brian,

The Japanese made lots of snuff bottles in the 19th C., but 90+% were inexpensive plain swirled glass flasks imitating hardstones (agate, primarily), used to sell snuff.
Re.'Marine Ivory' (whalebone, whaletooth, narwhal tusk, walrus ivory, etc.), the Chinese bought ALL of them from merchants who sold exotic materials, primarily in the ports.

This specific bottle looks VERY modern, and not very good. Sadly.
Best,
Joey
