Dear Tom,

It is indeed complicated. I have always been taught the simpler version which are the Zitan trees found in China.

As for the trees in Singapore, lets go find them together? I don't remember seeing them.

Cheers,
YT

I was under the impression that Zitan was from a hardwood grown in SE Asia.
Otherwise how to account for floors made of it in Phuket? It certainly was not imported from China to Phuket. The only floor in Thailand made of material from China that I've seen or even know of, is the superb floor in the Royal palace in Bangkok, made of Chinese Ming B & W tiles

Dear YT,
Why do you think that Zitan is the Pterocarpus indicus? In the link that you have provided they do not mention Zitan. Besides that, in the link they say that the wood is medium-heavy hardwood, while Zitan is really hard. The classification of plants is sometimes very complicated because the same popular name is given to a tree in an area and to a completely different tree in another area. Or the same name can be attributed to different species of the same family. I think that most probably Zitan is the Pterocarpus Sandalinus, but as said previously, to be sure it is a difficult task because the wood itself is not unanimously recognized.
Kind regards
Giovanni

Dear Giovanni,

The issue with Zitan is very complicated as mentioned by Tom.

If you are talking about the very dense and very huge panels that were imperial made during the Ming and early Qing dynasty, then these Zitan were from China and were chopped down to extinction. Later there are Zitan trees planted and under reserve protected lands.

Mid Qing to later, furniture are made from Zitan in specific regions other than China.
Pterocarpus Sandalinus as the harder Zitan are highly sought after.
Pterocarpus indicus are Zitan too but are more known by the common name of rosewood.

This is my simplified version although I agreed with Tom about this complicated issue and I do have areas I do not understand.

Cheers,
YT

Dear YT,
that is exactly what I meant. When a precious type of wood is becoming scarce, people (more precisely: dealers) start to call with the same name a similar wood, often of the same family, but it is not the same. I saw this many times in Brazil.
Kind regards

Guys, at LACMA's snuff bottle show, there was a Zitan treasurebox on display!
Just like the one in this post!

Dear Joey,

Great to know that! So unexpected! How does it look to you? By the way, I guess LA stands for Los Angeles, but what does CMA stand for? Enjoy the Carlifornian sunshine and breeze!

Best,
Samson

Dear Samson,

It looks beautiful! LACMA is the initials for Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Guys,

I forgot to mention to Samson, or to post here, that in Taipei, John Ang offered me a beautiful Zitan incense holder box, with fretwork sides, and I wanted it, but at US$2,500 for a box 200mm X 75mm X 50mm, and not the finest carving I've ever seen, I passed on it. He had it on consignment, and called the owner to find out the best price, and she was 'chancing her arm', as my rural neighbours in County Wexford Ireland would say... Grin Roll Eyes

Not nearly as well made as the Zitan treasure box in LACMA.
Best,
Joey
