General information about the Site

This Chinese snuff bottle community forum is dedicated to the novice, more experienced, and expert collectors. Topics are intended to cover all aspects and types of bottle collecting. To include trials, tribulations, identifying, researching, and much more.

We also freely pour out our pains of spending money, only to later find that our choice in a bottle was not as we expected ! There is no extra charge for our "pain management" program !

We are also working extra hard towards supporting, and giving well deserved recognition to all new and upcoming student artists of "Very Modern" inside painted bottles.

Among other things, donations help keep the forum free from Google type advertisements, and also make it possible to purchases additional photo hosting MB space.

Forum Bottle In The Spotlight !

Another extra special bottle that our fellow collector Pin shared. The "thousand word" classical text is painted by LI Ruchen with a beautifully shaped bottle of upright rectangular form, and sloping shoulders. Congratulations Pin !

Dear all,

I came across this IP bottle by Ma Shaoxian of the theme of "Searching for Plum Blossoms in Snow" (what I reckon).

There're some white spots around the body of the scholar riding the donkey. Two of them are pretty large.

Do you think these white spots are deliberately created by the artist to illustrate the snow or they are paint wear/scratches on the paint? Huh

Also attached is a YYT landscape bottle which I quite like. What do you think about it?

Best,
Samson

Dear Samson,

Maybe after the auction.

Attached a bottle with similar design.
There is a bit of a glare as I usually photograph under natural sunlight.

Provenance:
Arthur Gadsby

Publish and exhibited:
Hong Kong Museum of Art ‘Chinese Snuff Bottles’, 1977, cat. p.116, No.284;
JICSBS, Arthur Gadsby, March 1979, P.20, fig. 31;
Arts of Asia, Nov-Dec 1993 p.97, no.56;
JICSBS Summer 1994, Ka Bo Tsang, P. 6, Fig. 3 and 4

Cheers,
YT

Thanks YT!

Yes, the themes are identical. Yours looks so fine, I can't help but admire the character exhibited by Ma Shaoxuan's amazing calligraphy!

Great one...

Best,
Samson

Dear Samson,

      I agree with George.
Where is the bottle located? Is it in a humid damp environment, where mold could develop?
Best,
Joey

Dear Joey,

I have no idea, I didn't get to see it personally.. Smiley But I think we can't rule out that possibility...

Dear Samson,

Since the white dots only appear on the solid black painted areas (and a little on the red), they look like places where the paint has just worn away.

You will be able to see white spots through out the bottle if it is mold.. Won't be limited to the paint..

Dear Samson,

Maybe after the auction.

Dear Samson,

If you look carefully in the Ma ShaoXian inside painted snuff bottle, it is not just two spots. Look at the sage's backside, with one big white chunk.
This is a bottle that has suffered intense sunburnt with overall fading and paints flaking off.
You will see that the black outlines still remain on the two smaller spots and the bigger patch.

1939 is a good year where Ma ShaoXian's painting and calligraphy is prime. A pity!

Dear YT,

I see, that's a pity indeed... Cry But it still went high... (in my opinion)

This is one of the bottles I will remember through my snuff bottle collecting life to come... Now I'll carry on my way hunting for bottles...

Best,
Samson

$2,250? I guess the consignor will be happy. Wasn't the estimate around $300-$400?

Well Brian, I think it's definitely more than $300-400. But I personally wouldn't pay $2,250 for it given its condition....

Dear Joey,

I have always admired his calligraphy perfected during his later life.
This is one of them and date range is 1933-1940, so my presumption that he is still painting at 1939 is possible. Now my secret is out as I have always wanted a bottle in this range. Grin

Dear Samson and Brian,

If this is the real deal, do you think $2,250 is too expensive?
The recent pricing of Ma ShaoXian bidded doesn't think so. http://www.christies.com/lotfinder/lot/an-inside-painted-glass-snuff-bottle-signed-shaoxian-5922037-details.aspx?from=searchresults&intObjectID=5922037&sid=886391bc-113e-4b16-b896-010839c02ba6

Dear YT,

The two examples you posted are simply astounding! But if that's the price they usually fetch, I'd have to say that I'm not ready for Ma Shaoxian yet. I need to set it as my long term goal... Grin

Dear YT,

Lot 212, which you posted, is one of Ma Shaoxian's masterpieces.
I have 2 of his masterpieces, my A-1 and C-3 from "Worlds",  another which is also very fine, though not at that stellar level, and one which is a bit worn in parts, but still quite a nice example.

One could be lucky, or simply get a slightly lesser example.
Best,
Joey
